Leaving her coffee cup behind, she pushed open the door to the examination room. He was alone. Skye stood at the door, not knowing what to do or say.

“Skye, you stayed. Come here and sit wi’ me.”

No way.

She heard two voices, overlapping and in sync: Cailin’s deep, rumbling burr, and Roderick’s more even, tenor tones. She was going insane. Absolutely fucking bonkers. Miraculously, she willed her legs to move forward until she sat in the chair by Roderick’s bed.

“My beautiful lass, I’ve come back to you.”

Two voices, but Cailin’s words.

“Is it you?” she asked tremulously.

“We are both here, Skye.”

With each word spoken, the voices synchronized some more, and blended, until they became one.

“We’ve melded, don’t know how. Skye, I returned to 1814. I was dying. I held the sword and wished with all my soul to be returned to you. Then I felt electric shocks through my body. So here I am. Seems Roderick and I have merged in all ways. I have his memories; he has mine. We are now one being.” The voice was an amazing mix of both men. The tones were deeper than Roderick’s, not as deep as Cailin’s, and if she listened really closely, the slightest hint of a Scottish brogue. How was this possible?

Cailin—Roderick—held out his hand, she took it, and kissed his bruised knuckles. Relief, but also trepidation, ruled her thoughts.

“Before the photo shoot last week, Roderick asked for a drink. What was it?”

“Latte with skim.”

“A few nights ago, Cailin and I watched a movie, the first one he’d ever seen. What was it?”

Highlander
.”

Skye dropped his hand.
Holy shit
. They did have each other’s memories. Without thinking, she stood, leaned down, and hugged him tight. Hell, she was crying—again.

Cailin stroked her back in comfort, and she sobbed into his neck.

“There, lass. If this is the only way I can return to you, I accept it gladly. If you would like, you can call me Cailin. I would like that, but only you. To the rest of the world, I’m Roderick. Can you accept this? Can you accept the new me?”

She pulled back. Her hand caressed his cheek. Call her crazy, but she would take Cailin any way she could get him. It would take an adjustment, a leap of faith. An acceptance that love conquers all. This new “Cailin” would be different, but not enough for her to turn away from love and happiness.

“Yes, I can. Anything. I love you so much.”

Cailin leaned into her hand and sighed. “I love you, too, Skye.”

Whatever magic was at work, she was silently thankful. This sexy, highlander cover model was all hers.

Living in a small town in a corner of Ontario, Canada, I while away my spare time writing, reviewing and reading romance. As long as I can avoid being hit by a runaway moose here in this wilderness paradise, I assume everything is golden. Originally from the east coast of Canada, I love to set some of my stories in the Maritime Provinces.

Happily married for a long time to my own hero, a teacher that braves everything that is thrown at him. His encouragement keeps me moving forward.
