"Oh, not me!" Robbie shook his head.

About to ask him to explain the answer further, Dave caught Robbie's admonishing eye when he said, "Don't go there. It'll deteriorate into work talk."

Immediately getting it, Dave nodded in agreement. "Right.

Let me just touch you everywhere at once. I love the feel of your skin."

In a sensual whisper, Robbie said, "Touch me," as he splayed out on the bed.

Leaning up on his elbow, Dave very lightly traced a line from Robbie's jaw to his chest, then down to his belly button, and around his cock and balls. Massaging them in his large hand, he then smoothed back up that flat stomach to his nipples and toyed with them. "You ... you're a very handsome man, Robbie."

"You took the words right out of my mouth."

"Me? I can't hold a candle to you."

With a look of complete disbelief, Robbie said, "You just fishing for a compliment? Come on."

"No. I'm not. I just don't think I'm that good looking, that's all."

Turning so he was facing him, two mirror images both leaning with the palm of their hand propping up their head, Robbie appeared to be studying his face carefully. Dave averted his eyes and whispered, "Don't analyze me."

"Why not? You said something completely ridiculous."

Suddenly Dave felt foolish. He dropped back onto the mattress and stared at the ceiling and its recessed lighting.

Robbie inched closer until he was resting on his chest. In a soft voice Robbie said, "High cheek bones, square jaw, soft full lips, incredible bedroom eyes ... hmmm, let me see, where is the ugly or plainness hiding? Oh, right, maybe it's your body. Shall we check? Huge rounded pectoral muscles ...

enormous deltoids, an egg carton abdomen—"

"All right," Dave sighed, "You don't have to keep going."

"I didn't imagine you'd be one to have low self-esteem."

Dave didn't like the look of disappointment in his eye. He knew this man was very clever and concealing things were useless.

It only took a moment. Then Robbie whispered, "Being gay. That's why the esteem has drained from you. Hiding. I take it your parents would object."

"I don't want to discuss it. Okay?"

"You're getting defensive. I get it. Look. I just want you to know you are fabulous. I don't just go for anyone. I mean, I'm not Mr. Perfect, but I am Mr. Picky."

Meeting those crystal blue eyes once more, Dave sighed.

"Fine. I'm handsome."

"Better. I'd love to kiss you again but that fucking stubble has already made my lip raw. I don't need to go to work with a red mustache."

"Sorry. I know it's still rough." Dave smoothed his hand over it again.

"No problem." Robbie propped his head up on a pillow and stroked the taut skin of Dave's chest. "Stop thinking."

"I can't help it." Dave was beginning to feel a slight dread in the pit of his stomach. Maybe it was the first encounter with a man, or maybe it was the idea that he couldn't love him because he'd leave to go back to Quantico, or maybe it was the fact that a demented serial killer was stalking boys.

Whatever the reason, he was uncomfortable.

"Don't worry, baby."

Dave met his eyes.

"Let the world turn without you tonight."

"Sing it for me," Dave replied sarcastically.

"I would if I had a voice. You know that one?"

"I was always a fan of
Jesus Christ Superstar
."

"Do you come from a religious family?"

"Very. I'm not partial to religion myself though." He reached out to brush Robbie's long hair back from his forehead.

"Me neither. It's a terrible barrier that separates people."

"Yes. I agree."

"Christ, I need to kiss you."

"Let me shave it off." Dave made as if he was getting off the bed.

"I can't ask you to do that. Stop. Lay down."

Sitting upright, Dave smiled, "But, I want to kiss you as well. I just don't want to make your face a mess. Screw it.

Get me a razor."

"You sure?"

"Yeah. I'll grow it when you leave." Standing up, Dave waited for him to lead the way to the bathroom. When he did he was handed a new razor and some shaving foam. After 63

gazing at it for a moment, he shaved it off with two swift strokes, then rinsed his face.

When he looked in the mirror he found a naked movie star smiling at him lovingly. "All gone. Do I get more kisses now?"

"Get over here," Robbie replied and reached out for him.

Dave wrapped him up in his arms and found his lips. Tiny sounds of longing followed the passionate kissing and soon they were making their way back, still attached to each other, to the bedroom. Parting from his lips, Dave breathed out, "My turn," then sank to his knees and took Robbie's cock into his mouth.

He wasn't sure how it would feel, a man's cock in his mouth. Though night after night he fantasized about it, the reality was much more exciting than his imagination. But, just the thought of giving Robbie that kind of pleasure was enough to satisfy him. He knew damn well what a good blow-job was like, and wanted to give to this man as good as he got. Any apprehension he may have had previous to it vanished like a shout on the wind.

Feeling Robbie holding his shoulders tightly for balance, Dave devoured him, gripping his ass cheeks in each hand and pumping his hips into his mouth. When he tasted cum he closed his eyes and sucked harder, finding his anus and pushing in for the added thrill. And by the sound of Robbie's gasping vocalizations he knew he had done a good job.

Unwilling to stop, he pushed Robbie backwards until he fell onto the mattress then climbed over him and continued to lap at him gently as he recovered.

"Oh, lover," Robbie panted, "I think you were lying to me.

This isn't your first time. No way..." he tried to catch his breath. "Jesus. That was so intense I felt as if my cock blew off."

A horrible image flashed through Dave's mind. The moment he paused to get rid of it, it was as if Robbie knew.

"Sorry. Dave, bad choice of words. Sorry. Get up here and hold me."

That cold sensation came back to his stomach. He moved his way higher on the bed and embraced Robbie as if he were his life partner and all the comfort and love he ever needed would come from him eternally. Kisses were delivered all over Dave's face and neck, while Robbie crooned, "Baby ... baby ...

shhh ... think of us. Think of us now."

As the sense of frustration overwhelmed him, Dave lay back once again on the bed and stared at the ceiling. "I think I'm just exhausted."

"Sleep."

"I'd actually like to shower first. Is that okay?"

"You bet."

* * * *

As Dave climbed off the bed slowly, Robbie watched sadly, knowing this murder case would take its toll on every officer who it touched.

When he heard the shower going, he stood off the bed and cleaned up the wrapper and spent condom, then headed to the bathroom to check on him. His gorgeous hot skin was glistening through the steamy shower glass. Robbie leaned 65

back on the door frame to watch as he lathered up. As if he felt someone watching, Dave wiped at the mist and looked out to see him. When he smiled sweetly at him Robbie approached and pulled back one of the sliding doors. "Wow."

Dave lowered his lashes shyly.

"You ever think of auditioning for an acting career?" Robbie imagined him in every Hollywood scenario.

"No. But I did think you should be in a movie."

"Can I join you?" Robbie gestured to the water.

"Of course!" Dave moved back and made room.

Climbing in, Robbie stood under the shower head and wet down. When he opened his eyes, Dave was staring at him the way he had on their first meeting. Slyly, Robbie said, "At least you don't have to imagine I'm undressed this time." As Dave's blush appeared Robbie burst out laughing. "Get over here."

They embraced in the hot shower and rocked each other gently.

Dave wanted him forever. He didn't want to let him go.

Towel-dried and relaxing, they were sitting up against the headboard of the bed as soft music floated through the air.

While they sipped their beers, Dave imagined living that way.

It was a very comforting feeling to have a lover in bed with you. He could get used to it. With that thought in his head, he tilted over and looked at Robbie's handsome profile. His hair was still damp but drying quickly in the warm room. "You have to get up early tomorrow?"

As if coming aware, Robbie turned to face him and replied,

"Yes."

"Oh. What time?"

"Eight-ish? Why? You want me to spend the day with you?"

"I know you can't."

"No. I can't." Robbie reached for his hand and squeezed it tightly.

"This case. You're here to solve this stupid case." Dave set his beer down on the night stand and rolled over so he was lying on his side and able to stare at Robbie more easily. "So

... how many exactly were murdered in Oregon?"

"Twenty."

Gaping in horror, Dave choked, "Twenty? No. You have to be kidding me."

"I wish I were."

Pausing to think, Dave then asked, "One a night?"

Nodding, Robbie whispered, "Every night for twenty nights.

Then he stopped."

"Stopped and came here."

"Stopped and came here," Robbie echoed blankly, as if he were very tired suddenly.

"Did he start in Oregon?"

"As far as we know he started in San Francisco."

Trying to refrain from asking the question on his mind, Dave rubbed his face in anguish.

And characteristically answering it even without it being asked, Robbie said in the same mechanical dry voice, "Twenty in San Fran. Then it stopped."

"Oh god ... I can't handle twenty. Why can't we find him?

I'm not getting this."

"He's very canny, Dave. He knows exactly how we work. I swear if I didn't know better I'd say he was an ex-cop, ex-evidence tech, or an ex-agent. Ex-something."

"Have you guys explored that line of thinking?"

"To death. Got us no where. We can't figure out how he gets rid of the clothing. None of the witnesses have seen him carrying anything. We know he wears extra clothes, but what the hell does he do with them after the killing? He has to get rid of them somewhere."

"He probably takes them home and burns them."

"Yeah, probably."

"Forty-five victims? That seems so surreal to me." Dave rolled to his back again and sighed.

"Wait till it's sixty. I feel as if I'm up to my neck in corpses."

"Crap. We have to get lucky. Somehow this guy has to screw up."

"I thought the same way. After the first five I thought, no way. He has to trip up."

"You try decoys? Off duty cops who fit the description?"

"They're all too old. And he sniffs our volunteer decoys out. He just knows, like he is privy to the info. You can tell it drives me crazy. I can just about see this guy's face in my mind from all the composites and descriptions, yet, he's evaded us. I'm really struggling with this one. I feel as if I've done all I can to help get a profile of him."

Jerking his head towards him, Dave said, "Don't leave."

A sweet smile appeared on Robbie's face. "I'm not, babe. I have to stick with it. But, sometimes I feel as if they expect me to know the guy's name and address or I can't earn my keep. But, they aren't doing anything more to solve the case than I am. Do you believe there isn't a trace of his forensics anywhere? What ever happened to Locard's principle?"

"Maybe he shaves all his hair off." Dave rubbed his bald head as an example.

"The witnesses say he has dark hair."

"A wig?"

"Who knows? Maybe."

As he watched Robbie yawn, Dave whispered, "Turn off the light. Get some sleep."

"I'm all right. It's only eleven." He checked the digital alarm clock by the bed and set it. "In case we drift off."

"Good idea." Dave moved closer to him and snaked his arm under his pillow so he could cuddle with him. "Where are you from originally? Were you born in Virginia?"

"No. I was born in Florida."

"You have family there?" Dave sniffed his hair and then nuzzled his neck.

"Some."

Judging from his evasive answers, Dave said, "Not close to them?"

"No. See how easy it is to mind read?" Robbie laughed softly and kissed his cheek.

"Yeah. I do. Go to sleep."

"Good night, babe." Robbie pecked his lips and switched off the table lamp.

"Night."

As the room darkened Dave pulled Robbie's body closer, as if he were his guardian angel and would protect him from the demons of the night. But what he really needed protection from was his own dark thoughts.

Chapter Four

He woke before the alarm. Seeing that fantastic male sleeping next to him was like living some kind of a dream. He wanted him. The tugging going on in his heart was torture.

Staring at him while he dozed, he was trying to throw thoughts at him once again.
Don't leave! Don't leave
! echoed through his temples.

Ironically Robbie's eyes opened slowly. As he surfaced to the dawn he smiled at his bedmate. "Hullo, gorgeous. I could get used to this."

"Me too."

Leaning to see the clock, Robbie switched off the alarm and asked, "Morning screw? You up for it?"

"Oh, yes," Dave laughed in reply.

The bed sheets were thrown off and a condom was located and slid on. As he humped this fabulous pretty boy, Dave closed his eyes and prayed for him to stay.
