This index lists all the characters in Njal's Saga except those who appear only in genealogies. Kings and earls and certain key figures from the saga world are included, as well as the gods named in the verses. The index follows the Icelandic naming convention of the patronymic (-
son
or -
dottir
). Most names of fathers take the ending -
s
or -
ar
before being combined into patronymics (
Njalsson
,
Starkadarson
) while those ending in -
i
change this to -
a
(
Helgason
). Nicknames are included and many characters are also identified by their place of residence, status or relation to important figures in the saga. The name of the father is included in parentheses after the patronymic where clarification is useful, either because several characters bear the same name (e.g.
Hoskuld
) or when the name undergoes a vowel change when combined (e.g.
