“It’s okay, baby girl, he’s with us.”

The figure drew closer. It was a mammoth of a man. He lumbered near, his chest-length beard bobbing under his chin.

“There they are! He’s making a run for the treeline!”

“Fuck,” yelled James. “Hurry, Vaughny! We gotta roll!” He kicked started his motorcycle. If they didn’t know exactly where we were before, they definitely did now.

“Go! I’ll catch up,” shouted Vaughn.

“No way. We leave together,” yelled James.

The big man reached his motorcycle and hopped on. The gang was in close pursuit. He started it in a flash, and before I knew it, the three of us were rolling forward. More shots erupted behind us. Areas of dirt jumped up around our feet where their bullets hit.

“We’re outta here!” screamed Vaughn.

The HOHers ran to their motorcycles so they could give chase, but we had a decent head start. James turned and yelled something to me over his shoulder but I couldn’t hear it. The combination of gunfire and motorcycle engines was deafening. I just hugged him tighter.

James’s wide shoulders blocked most of the wind, but still, my little half-shirt whipped behind us. My bare flesh was covered in goosebumps from the cold. The muscles in my bare legs ached from the way I was straddling the back of his seat. The three of us leaned forward into the harsh air as they increased their speed.

The dirt road jostled us, but both men were experienced riders. They handled the rocks and dips in the road with expertise. I didn’t dare look back, but I could feel us separating from them. We reached the paved highway and I felt James’s body tense in anticipation. He gave Vaughn a knowing look and pushed the throttle. We rode through the night at break-neck speed. The lights on the houses in the distance zipped by. I tried to focus on my own breathing.

After what felt like ages, we began to slow. Vaughn took the lead and made a right turn on to a little side road. James followed close behind. I finally dared to look up when I heard the bikes engine return to a low gurgle and I felt James steady it with his feet.

“Did we get away?” I asked.

“Yeah, I think so.” said James. “They wouldn’t risk comin’ this far, at least not all of ‘em. There’s probably two or three still out there lookin’ around for us, but they won’t find us.”

“Not in this country,” added Vaughn. “It’s too wide open. They won’t know where to look.” He was slumped forward, his elbows resting on the handlebars.

“You okay, man?” asked James.

Vaughn forced a weak smile and glanced behind him. James and I both followed his gaze. There was spreading patch of red on the back of his vest.

“They got me, Icy.”

“Shot? You’re shot?” asked James.

“Felt like a snake jumped up and bit me. I guess it happened right around the time we were tearin’ ass outta there.”

“Alright, buddy. It’s okay. We’re gonna get someone to take a look at you.”

“No. No hospitals. That’s the rule, remember?” he chuckled.

“Fuck that, man. We’ll fix you up. Hayes can get somebody to come look at you. You don’t have to go to the hospital. He’s got friendly doctors all over the place.” said James.

“Too late, brother. They got me good. I could tell right away…”

I was crying again. He was the size of a house and looked mean enough to match. But right now, listening to him talk, he reminded me of a big teddy bear. And it was my fault he was hurt. He was shot trying to rescue
me
.

“No, no, no,” I said. “We can get you help.”

James jumped off his bike and ran to his friend’s side. “I’m not lettin’ go that easy, brother, c’mon.”

But Vaughn remained still. That small smile stayed on his lips, though you could barely see it under his mass of facial hair. His eyes fell vacant. “Too late,” he said. “Too late…”

And then he was gone.

***

James was silent as we entered his apartment. He had been that way since we left Vaughn. His walls were empty and sad. His furniture consisted of an old mismatched couch and chair, and a turned over milk crate for a table. Everything else he owned seemed to just meet the bare essentials for living.

“Uh...I should probably call someone,” I said. “My mom is probably going crazy looking for me.”

“You don’t need to do anything right now,” he said. His voice was gruff.

“It’s just, she gets really worried when I don’t call. How long did they have me, anyway? I can’t remember.”

“You’re staying here. And you’re gonna lay low.”

“But I need-”

“You need to do what I tell you, and that’s it.” His anger was percolating just below the surface. He walked to his beaten old couch and collapsed in a heap. He rubbed the his temples in a clockwise circle and closed his eyes. “Listen,” he said. “I know you want to contact your family, but you can’t right now. We need to keep a low profile until this thing blows over. If you go running back home, they’re gonna find you. And they won’t care about your mom. If you contact her, she could be in danger.”

“Oh…”

“These are violent people we’re talking about. Just because you got away, doesn’t mean they’re gonna give up and go home. They’re looking for you...and now they’re pissed.”

“Your friend,” I said. “I’m so sorry-”

His eyes blazed. “Don’t bring him up again!”

My lip quivered and I didn’t know what to do. “It’s my fault. He would be okay if-”

“It’s not your fault,” he said. “You didn’t ask for any of this. Vaughn was helping me, and that’s it. It’s my fault if it’s anybody’s.” He shifted in his seat. “Just...please don’t bring it up again.”

I shifted uncomfortably in front of him, trying to stretch the little shirt as far down as it would go.

“You can find something to put on in the bedroom,” he said, nodding toward the back.

He looked so sad and tired. I couldn’t help but go to him. I sat on his left and I sensed his posture change.

“Thank you,” I said. “Why did you come for me?”

James shook his head slowly. “Because,” he said, “I chose to get involved with this life, you didn’t. When you got caught up in it, I had a responsibility to help.”

“But you didn’t,” I said. “I never should have been there in the first place. It was my own stupidity. I just...I wanted to see you again after that first time.”

He leaned back in his seat and sighed.

“I didn’t think all of this would happen.” I said.

He put his hand on my bare thigh. I looked to him and our eyes met. Seconds felt like hours as we held each others gaze. The intensity made me recoil the slightest bit.

I watched his lips part, as if to speak, but I couldn’t wait any longer. I attacked his mouth with mine. We met in a warm embrace. He caught me and pushed back. Our tongues danced together as a spark ignited between us.

“James, I…”

He pushed me by my shoulders until I was flat on his couch. His tongue darted in and out of my mouth. I tried to catch it with my lips. The rough stubble of his chin brushed my neck.

“I want to be inside you,” he growled.

His hands found my bare middle and he touched my flesh. I could feel a wet warmth spread between my legs. “Fill me,” I whispered into his ear.

That invitation was all he needed to turn into a wild man. He ripped the shirt from my body, exposing my bare breasts. He tossed the shredded shirt on the floor. I guided his calloused hand to my curvy chest. He squeezed gently at my breast and pinched my nipple. His tongue stayed in my mouth, moving in and out...teasing me.

“Take me,” I groaned.

We rubbed up against each other. I reached behind him and grabbed at his shirt. I brushed against a cold, metal object with the back of my hand. His pistol clattered to the floor. He nudged it under the couch with his booted foot, then lunged at my neck.

He kissed lightly behind my ear while letting his hands fall further toward my waist. I tried for his shirt again, this time finding the bottom and yanking it up over his head. His chest was muscled and tan. His stomach was flat. The branch of a tree he had tattooed on his left arm wound its way up to his shoulder. A scar creased his shoulder and ended before his neck. It was a memento, no doubt, from some battle long ago.

I liked the way he moved on top of me. His hulking figure played firmly over me without being smothering. He held me down in just the right ways.

His fingers trailed down my belly and found the band of my underwear. He tugged it down off my hips, exposing my soft, pink mound.

“Touch yourself,” he begged. He guided my hand to my wet folds. I caressed myself gently and let my fingertips find my clit. I rubbed it in vigorous little circles while he sucked at my nipple. The slow build was driving me wild.

With both hands, he shoved my knees apart. “Relax your hips,” he said.

I fought the tension in my body and tried to let the orgasm wash over me. His heavy breath in my ear pushed me over the edge. An explosion went off inside of me. My toes curled. I rocked back and squirmed. His hands tightened on my calves. I wanted more.

Sweat formed on the back of my neck and my hands shook, but I was able to reach forward and get a hold of his belt. It was heavy and angry looking. I pulled it free of the loops. He helped me slide his pants down over his rock-hard manhood.

I devoured him with my mouth. His cock slid back and forth between my lips. My tongue went the distance on his impressive length. He rubbed my back with one hand and tangled the fingers of his other in my mess of hair. I could hear his respirations increasing.

Then, the powerful man lifted me in the air and tossed me into the corner of the couch. My legs bounced high and he caught me by the ankles. He pushed my feet skyward, then buried his tongue inside me. I dripped with lust. He slid his hands under my butt and pulled me closer.

“James, oh God!”

He bit my inner thigh. His teeth gripped me firmly. It sent a shiver down my spine. I resisted the urge to flinch. He returned his focus to my wanting middle and went at me furiously.

James used his wet, pretty tongue against my nub. It started slowly, creating friction on just the right spot. Then, he increased to a mind-numbing pace. He slid two fingers inside of me and continued to work me with his mouth. He made a “come hither” motion with his fingers and his tongue touched me in a way that sent me reeling. I came again, this time I couldn’t contain my limbs from jerking and my hips from twitching.

James picked me up and sat me down on top of him. “You want me to teach you how to ride?” he asked.

I massaged his pecks. “Relax,” I said. “I think you’ll be surprised by what I already know.”

He adjusted his position on the couch and leaned back. His shaft rubbed against my butt as it slid forward. My hands dropped to his midsection and I let him bear my weight while I lined us up. When he entered me I felt his true power.

We bounced rhythmically, neither of us wanting to break eye contact. His thighs were hard. Our fingers intertwined as we leveraged against each other.

The look of pleasure on his face drove me to work harder. I rolled my hips, making sure to take every inch. His girth put pressure on my sweet spot.

Without warning, he bucked his hips and sent me sprawling forward. His sweet laughter brought a smile to my own lips.
