“So, what you’re saying is, you
really
enjoy sex.” In large, intense quantities.

“Mmhmm.”

“Like if I were, for instance, if I were to go to you and dump the bucket of hot soapy water on the both of us. It would be on?”

Her eyes dilated a bit but she just smiled. “Meghan, it would be on like Donkey Kong.”

I burst out laughing. “Classy, Lia.”

Downstairs the crowd had thinned out, but not by much. Music was playing and people seemed to be having a good time dancing and socializing.

“Well, back to work.” Lia said cheerfully.

I glanced at her. “You mean, your job, office work?”

“Yes. I have some things to do in the office, and I’ve been away all afternoon.”

Hopefully my face didn’t show the various memories of what we’ve been doing all afternoon. Man, talk about a fucking wild day. Technically, me staying close to Lia could be considered work, right?

Brenda spotted us, coming over with a knowing grin. She only rolled her eyes at the two of us, not mentioning our long absence.

“Can I catch a ride back with you, Lia? My friend would like to stay but I need to get back to the office.”

Lia’s eyes scanned the crowd. “Who’s your friend? What’s his or her name?”

“Don’t, Lia. My friend does not want to be harassed or stalked. Nor does he need his background checked.”

She cut her eyes to Brenda. “So it’s a man. Who, Brenda?”

Brenda sighed, turning to me. “Lia is slightly overprotective of me.”

Lia shrugged, folding her arms. “If you don’t tell me I’ll have Zi look into it.”

They stared at each other, until Brenda sighed again, heavily. “I’ll tell you once we get into the car, you can harass him another day. From a distance.”

Lia was still scanning the crowd when she froze, eyes narrowing. “Never mind. I see him. It’s the man in the light gray suit, purple tie, correct?”

She smiled at Brenda’s scowl. “You have a type, dear.”

“I do not have a type. He is nothing like Terrell. “

“Mmhmm,” Lia said, making her way to the unsuspecting guy.

“Damn,” Brenda whispered as Lia introduced herself. “I kind of liked him.”

I stared at them, fascinated. Lia had led him to a more secluded corner, where she was having a very engaged conversation with the guy, who seemed thrilled at the attention.

“What’s she’s going to do to him?”

Brenda sighed, lifted her shoulders in resignation. “She’s going to eat him alive.”

~~

The car ride back to the office was somewhat animated. I let Brenda sit in the front with Lia, doing a double take when Zi slid in the backseat next to me.

“You don’t have to do your freaky people reading voodoo on all my dates, Lia. I like a bit of mystery is all I’m saying.”

Brenda was taking exception to Lia loudly asking the guy in the grey suit, (John as it turned out), where his wife was and if she knew he was here on a date with another woman.

“You wanted the mystery of dating a married man, Brenda?” Lia pulled onto the long driveway, pausing to wave goodbye to the guard.

Brenda made a noise, not wanting to concede the point. “You date married woman all the time, Lia.”

“I fuck married women Brenda, there’s a difference. If you were just in there to fuck, well by all means I will turn around and you can fuck John the married dickhead.”

Brenda threw up her hands. “Well fuck, Lia, they’re all married, or gay.”

Lia turned and wiggled her eyebrows at her, leering comically. They both laughed, and the conversation transitioned to some other office scandal.

Azina shifted, staring at the back of Brenda’s seat. “Brenda’s the only person Lia’s ever gotten angry with. I’ve exasperated her, disappointed her, but she’s never been so much as testy with me.”

“Well. That’s good, right?” I asked.

Azina looked at me like I was the stupidest person on the planet. I flushed, shrugging.

“You may think I’m in your way, but your true competition is sitting in that front seat.”

“But,” I glanced up at the chatting friends, “Brenda said she doesn’t want to ruin the friendship.”

“Yeah, right until she changes her mind. Lia will fuck her the second she says yes.”

The front of the car was silent, Lia looking at us in the rearview. “Zi, don’t.”

Azina slumped into her seat with beautiful petulance, her ragged hat skewed to the side.

Wait. “I thought you were going to see Lia give her speech.”

A small smile curved her lips. “I did.”

“I, uh – I didn’t see you.”

“You saw me, you just didn’t recognize me. I poured your wine. Served you that canapé you didn’t like.”

I tried to let it go. Honestly I did. Because some shit you don’t really need answers to. But…

“The woman who served me the anchovy canapés, when I specifically stated I didn’t want anything with seafood, was about 50 years old and weighed at least 300 pounds.”

Zi shrugged, “I’m good at these things. Besides, who considers anchovies seafood?”

“Everybody! It is literally food that comes from the sea.”

She shrugged again, turning back to the window.

The quiet conversation in the front filtered back to us. They were talking about some old college buddy that was in town.

Azina sighed. “Your dress looks like it has shit on it.”

What? “Excuse me?”

She turned to me. “Shit. On your dress.”

I looked down, finding a smudge of brown on the hem.

“Oh. Um… I think it’s chocolate.”

“Lia’s pussy plaster, eh?” She leered at me. “You know she gives them out as Christmas presents.”

“No, I don’t Meghan.” Lia shook her head at Zi in the mirror. “Zi, stop giving Meghan a hard time. We have already reached an understanding.”

Wait, what understanding? When?

“Oh.” Zi raised her eyebrow. “Is that true?” She grabbed her hat and tossed it on the seat between us, ruffling her hair. “In that case, I’m starving. Let’s stop somewhere to eat before you ladies go back to the office. Those canapés were awful.”

Lia shook her head, turning a questioning eye to Brenda.

“Fine by me, the canapés were kind of crappy.”

“I’ll have you know the caterer came highly recommended,” Lia said.

Azina rolled her eyes. “What was she, the governor’s niece or something?”

Lia laughed. “The mayor’s nephew. Last year he was a botanist. He had some sort of food related epiphany and the mayor is desperately trying to keep the peace in his family.”

The conversation drifted to minor scandals in the mayor’s household, and I let the view out the window grab my attention.

I saw Azina’s reflection in the mirror, staring at me. I turned to her.

“You have something on your ear,” she said.

Probably more chocolate. I'm going to be finding smudges all day.

“Did I get it,” I said, running my finger over the lobe.

“No. Come here.”

I came without thinking, scooting over to where she sat, her legs splaying open on the leather seat.

She licked her finger and ran it over my earlobe. “Got it,” she said, warm breath on my neck.

I shivered. Couldn’t help it. The woman was so beautiful, even before I slept with Lia I would have looked twice. Maybe three times.

“What are you doing, Zi?”

She whispered in my ear. “Have you kissed any other women?”

“Aside from Lia?” I thought about Pam. “Not really.”

“Lia likes to share, Meghan. If I kiss you and you don’t like it, I won’t pursue you. I’ll leave you and Lia to your own devices.”

I stared at her. “You’ll break up with Lia?!”

She laughed. “Oh, honey – no, never. What I mean is, if you and Lia are hanging out, I won’t come butting in with my drama. Also, I won’t be actively trying to fuck you.”

I have the weirdest car rides with these people.

“Okay, fine.” I shrugged. I’m pretty certain after Lia’s Olympic quality sex I can handle a single kiss from another woman.

“Great,” she smiled, turning back to the window.

I shifted. “So…”

She looked back to me, surprised. “Oh not now, Meghan. You barely know me; it’s not fair to make you kiss a stranger.”

I heard Lia’s snort all the way back here, her shoulders moving as she tried to contain her laughter.

I flopped back down to my own side of the car. “All of you can collectively and individually go fuck yourselves,” I said as the car erupted in laughter.

The shit I put up with for this woman. Honestly. I caught Lia’s gaze in the rearview mirror. She winked at me and I smiled back goofily.

She was worth it.
