. Fraser's leadership example to his men this night earned him the Distinguished Service Order. Sapper McNaughton earned a Military Medal. When Matthew Halton tried to record an interview with McNaughton, the rough bulldozer operator from Manitoba was too shy to tell his story. So Halton did it for him in a memorable broadcast that made the sapper a nationally known hero.
