Cheyenne,” Callon said softly, rubbing my arm. “You need to eat. You haven’t had anything for a long time, and you need to keep yourself strong.” He sighed. “I know you’re hurting. We all are. But I need you to do this for me. Please.”

He unwrapped the sandwich and looked at me expectantly. Sighing, I picked it up and took one small bite. I didn’t chew—I shoved it to the side of my mouth. I handed him the sandwich as I rose. They didn’t follow as I headed to the bathroom, once inside I spat it out. It was repulsive. I felt ill, and headed for the sink, splashing cold water on my face. As I looked up, I saw myself in the mirror.

Daniel’s earrings were sparkling, and I lifted my hand to touch them. Then my fingers glided next to my necklace; the ruby-stoned necklace from Maes. The necklace I’d thrown back at him when I thought he’d betrayed us.

I glanced down at my left hand, stroking the ring Callon had given me. I saw the scar on my right wrist just below where Colt’s bracelet had once been. I couldn’t even bring myself to cry now. The well was dry; there was nothing left to give.

I didn’t meet Callon’s eyes as I emerged from the bathroom. The uneaten sandwich remained out, waiting on the chair. I ignored it, staring through the terminal windows. People and planes moved around us, but they held no meaning to me.

Callon wrapped the sandwich again and slid it into my pack. The call to board came, and we stood up. If he hadn’t pulled me along, I would have just remained in the same seat—just as I would have remained with Colt and let whatever happened come my way.

I had no reason to live anymore.

We sat in first class again. As we buckled in, I looked past Callon to the window. His fingers remained wound with mine, and his concerned stares were now fixed on me.

Soon, nothing but blue skies filled the void, and he closed the window blind. He folded up the armrest, and drew me closer. I slid off my sandals, and curled my legs into the chair. I placed my right hand over the top of our intertwined fingers, and our ring touched. This time, I felt no electricity; only a gentle hum that tried to soothe me. As I looked up, I saw Callon’s compassion, his love. All he wanted to do was comfort me, and I needed to let him.

We’ll heal, Cheyenne,” he said, stroking my hair. “Time heals all wounds.” His breath spilled down my cheeks—warm, not cold as I was on the inside. “Colt will live on in our hearts and minds—he’ll never truly leave us. And you’re not alone. I’m still here.”

He dropped his voice to a whisper.

I love you, Cheyenne. I’ll always love you. I want to spend the rest of my life loving you. You just have to say yes.” A tender caress touched my forehead, and I closed my eyes. I pulled away, and kept my eyes closed as I rested against him. Sleep would find me now. She could hide no longer. She would come and take me to my light—my Colt.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love heals a memory no one can steal.

~From a headstone in Ireland

Chapter 1

Memories linger, misty like the shadows, tingling your senses. Ever close, but yet far away. Craving to come near only to brush past for a fleeting moment before they disappear into the deep recesses once again.

Is this seat taken?” an unfamiliar voice asked.

I jumped in my desk. I hadn’t heard anyone approach.

No,” I replied as I looked up. A tall blond boy I’d never seen before was hovering over my desk. His smile reached all the way to his icy blue eyes.

I looked up and around the classroom. Was he talking to me?

I’m Colt O’Shea, and you are?” He stuck his hand out and I hesitated.

I wasn’t keen on making friends, not when I moved so much. Besides, I’d done a good job thus far avoiding other students for the first three weeks of the school year. I planned on keeping it that way.
