I walked forward as Rafael placed our son back down onto his feet. We watched him walk forward to the window and press his hands up against the glass. He was just a child but he seemed mesmerized as he looked out of the window and down into the c
ity.

You see that, Julian?” Rafael said to him. “All of that. The buildings, the streets, the cars, the people. They’re all out there waiting for you. Don’t stop yourself from going out there and seeing what’s out there for yourself.”

Rafael and I turned
to one another. He leaned forward and kissed me softly on the lips. I blushed as I smiled back at him.

I think he likes it up here,” I said. “Just like his father.”

Well, he can stay up here if he wants to. This is all going to be his once he gets old enough.”

But what if he grows up and gets over it? What if the view isn’t the same? What if he doesn’t want all of this?”

Whether it’s the top floor or down on the street, our son will get to be wherever he wants. Wherever he’s happy.”

I smiled at Rafael and kissed him again. Then I turned and looked down at my son. He was still captivated by the view from the highest floor in the tallest building in the city.

“What about you?” Rafael asked me.

What about me?”

Do you like the view from up here? You can stay up here, too. If that’s what you want…”

I walked forward and knelt down next to my son. As I looked at him, he continued to pay no attention to me. His big brown eyes were open wide as he tapped his fingers up against the window.

“I
do
like the view from up here,” I said. “But only if it’s with the people I care about.”

We’ve only been married for two years. Are you sure that’s enough time to know?”

“…
I know. I knew it from the first time I stepped into this office. I knew it then and I know it now.”

Rafael and I met one another one night on the town. I showed-up in his office without having planned it. Now we were married and he was the father of my son.

It wasn’t a coincidence. Fate. Luck. Destiny. I didn’t know what to call it. I just knew that this is where I was meant to be. Right now and for the rest of my life.

There are some things you can
’t explain. There are some things you just have to feel. That’s what makes us who we are. That’s what makes us feel alive. Every time your heart beats, it pulses. As long as my heart was beating, I would feel it. And that was enough to let me know where I belonged.
