About the Author

SHELLY SANDERS was born in Toronto, Ontario, moved to Illinois when she was eight, and came back to Canada for high school. She graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honors degree in English, from Ryerson University with a graduate degree in Journalism, and from the University of Toronto's Creative Writing Certificate Program. Before turning to fiction, Shelly worked as a journalist for twenty years, with articles in many of Canada's major publications including
Maclean's, Reader's Digest, Canadian Living
, the
Toronto Star, National Post,
and
Today's Parent
.

The Rachel Trilogy was inspired by her grandmother's escape from Russia. She traveled to Shanghai, where people of all races and faiths were accepted without papers in the 1900s. Shelly received a substantial grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to research and write
Rachel's Hope.
