LITTLE SCHOOL OF HORRORS
THE NEXT DAY

It was unbearably hot in the twins’ room and the house was covered in suffering silence. As always when Harmony came home from a night of drunken escapades, if they were lucky, she would be sleep until three the next afternoon.

Nudging Madjesty softly, Jayden tried to wake him up for school, which was only a few blocks from the house, before they were late. He knew waking him up abruptly could cause him to be frightened and wake up swinging, possibly hitting him in the face like he did many times before.

“Madjesty, its time to get up.” He said nudging him and then jumping out the way.
Madjesty rose and looked at his brother. “She not up is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Madjesty climbed out of bed. “I’m hungry. You?”
“Yeah.” They hadn’t eaten anything since the molded bread they consumed yesterday morning. “But we gotta hurry up to school before we get in trouble.”
They fished around the dirty clothes on the floor trying to find the best of the worst. Already on the fifth wear of most of their outfits, they settled on some jeans and shirts so funky they needed to be burned instead of worn. Once dressed, they tiptoed past Harmony who was asleep in the bathroom.
When they made it outside, they looked for Pimp Fast Tony, who ran three young prostitutes that sold their pussies all hours of the day or night. If they found him, he would give them pocket change to buy snacks at the corner store provided they promised to tell Harmony to come talk to him about business. What business he wanted with Harmony was beyond them, but the boys never said a word to her, afraid she’d find out that they’d been bumming for food and money in the neighborhood.
Pimp Fast had a daughter by his youngest whore Crissa and her name was Tisa Adams. Madjesty loved Tisa the moment he saw her face. Her smooth brown skin and wide eyes lifted Madjesty to the highest point whenever she came into a room. Tisa’s long brown pigtails always smelled of Ultra Sheen hair grease and her skin of Dove soap. Days would go by and Madjesty could never seem to understand why she liked him so much. But there was one thing he loved about Tisa above all…her smile and how it always seemed to make his problems go away.
Tisa always had money to spend on things she wanted like Boston Baked Beans and Lemonheads while Madjesty barely ate on a regular basis. Tisa’s father and mother although dysfunctional loved her with all they could give while Harmony despised the ground her children walked on. No matter what their differences, Tisa never seemed to care about what people said about Madjesty. She liked him and that was the bottom line.
“He’s not out here.” Madjesty said sadly, not seeing his shiny black Cadillac.
“Guess we gotta go to school without eating.” Jay responded.
“Again.”
The moment the twins entered the doors at school, students tormented them. First grade was brutal and they prayed for the day it would all be over. They couldn’t make it to their seats before their classmates pinched their noses and backed away from them because of the foul odor rising from their skin.
“Damn, they funky!” One boy yelled.
“Pewww!” The most popular girl in school added. “How come ya’ll never wash up?”
Instead of starting a fight by demanding that they leave them alone, the twins ignored the insults. They were passive and scared of confrontation so in their minds if they didn’t say anything back to the rude children, they would eventually leave them alone.
Madjesty looked at the teacher’s desk and noticed he wasn’t there. The twins hated when the teacher arrived late because it meant the children would have more time to taunt them.
“I’ma go sit in my seat,” Jayden said softly. “Love you.”
“Love you, too.” Madjesty said.
Jayden walked to his seat that was in the back of the room and Madjesty took his seat in the front. It fucked him up that so many people didn’t like him. All he wanted was to belong and to be loved, instead he was humiliated almost everyday of his life.
When everyone settled down, Madjesty prepared for the worst part of the day. His stomach was filled with anxiety because of what he endured daily in class. Knowing what was coming, he stiffened his neck as best he could and sat up straight. The gash on his forehead inflicted by his mother was crusted. Until a few sweat drops poured down his face and dampened the wound.
Sensing a presence behind him, Majesty waited until, “WHACK” He was hit in the back of his head with an encyclopedia, forcing his face violently into the wooden desk. The class erupted in laughter as Antwan Bolden fell on the floor holding his stomach. He was never able to make it to his seat right away due to laughing so hard.
Every morning since he’d been at the school, Antwan, the school’s bully would taunt and abuse him and today was no exception. Why? Because, Tisa chose Madjesty over him. Here Madjesty was, quiet, dirty and without any friends, yet one of the prettiest girls in school liked him anyway. Antwan decided to make Madjesty pay daily.
Madjesty lifted his face and tasted the salty blood in his mouth. He was use to it now and as he had many times before, he swallowed it all. Turning around, he saw his brother who was staring at him with a sad look upon his face. There was nothing Jayden could do to help, he wasn’t a fighter and neither was Madjesty.
“I love you.” Jayden mouthed, hoping it would make him feel a little better. And for the moment it did.
“I see your head getting stronger, Phillips!” Antwan said sitting in his seat. “Maybe it’s because of all that dirt around your neck!”
More laughter filled the room until the white male teacher walked in and placed his suitcase on his desk. “Settle down,” he said. Then he looked at the twins and held his nose. “I sure do wish you Phillip boys would wash up before coming into my classroom. This is getting a bit ridiculous.”
“I’m sorry, sir” Madjesty said, apologizing for his mother’s failures.”
“Me…me, too.” Jayden added.
“Yeah well that’s not good enough today.” Mr. Magarey replied. “We have a serious test scheduled and I need my students focused. So get out of my classroom! You two reek!” The class fell out into more laughter before the teacher addressed them and said, “Settle down. This is not a circus!”
“Sir, what about the test?” Madjesty asked. “If we don’t take it we gonna get a bad grade.”
The teacher frowned in defiance. He hated when a child spoke back to him after he made a decision. Opening up his desk drawer he removed the brown wooden paddle inside of it and said, “Get over here.”
“No, sir.” Madjesty said shaking his head. “I didn’t mean it. Honest.”
“GET OVER HERE NOW!”
Madjesty reluctantly walked toward Mr. Magarey’s desk. He felt off balance the closer he got to the teacher. Why was the world punching him in the gut over and over again? What was he expected to learn from all of this?
When Madjesty finally reached him, he bent over so that his rear was faced him. The teacher raised the hard wooden paddle and whacked Madjesty three times on the bottom.
The students looked and pointed but kept their comments to themselves. In Texas Corporal Punishment was allowed and since Harmony signed the necessary paperwork giving the school permission, Mr. Magarey took full advantage.
Madjesty held on to his tears. They were useless and he was tired of using them anyway. He felt as if he was a human punching bag for any adult who needed a release.
“Now!” He said placing the paddle back into the desk. “Don’t make me say it again! Leave my classroom! You’re being disruptive.”
Sore, Madjesty and his brother headed for the door.
Before the boys left the room the teacher said, “I’m tired of you two coming in here like this. If you don’t get it together, we’ll have to teach you outside next to the dumpster where you belong.”
