After a few more games of pool and some beers to unwind, Mick headed home to his room at the motel. He needed to shower and get ready for work at The Den. Striker put Mick in charge of running the place. Danny, who worked there before the club took it over, still helped with the books and tending the bar when needed.

Mick just started to undress for his shower when he heard someone knocking at the door. He opened it to find Lori, one of the motel owners, standing there with her eyes wide and her chin trembling. She frantically latched onto his arm and started pulling him out the door.

“I need your help, hurry!”

He dragged her back into his room and kicked the door closed with his heavy black boot. His mind went on instant alert and his body tensed as he stuffed his gun into the back waistband of his jeans. All kinds of crazy thoughts rushed through his mind in those few seconds before he asked, “What’s wrong, Lori?”

“There’s some kind of
thing
running around the office floor.”

“What?” Mick asked incredulously, bending down to look straight into her eyes. “A thing? I thought you were being robbed or something.” Mick straightened up and relaxed his body. He took a deep breath to calm down. “Okay, let’s go see this
thing
.”

Lori made Mick walk in front of her and she stayed outside the office until he came back out. He rolled his eyes and laughed. “That
thing
you’re so afraid of is a chipmunk. You must have left the back door ajar. There’s lots of them in the woods behind the motel. He’ll probably go back out by himself. Just make sure to keep the door closed when he leaves. I’ll call the club’s prospects, Jock and Lefty, to come over and set up a trap for you just in case he’s a little stubborn. He won’t hurt you, Lori. He’s more afraid of you than you are of him.”

Lori looked at him skeptically, not sure if she believed him. “All right, if you say so. Just please, tell them to hurry over.”

Mick went back to his room and made the call. By the time he was dressed and heading out, he spotted Lefty and Jock pulling up in the club’s van. Jock didn’t look too happy, carrying the cage towards the motel office. Mick smiled, thinking how lucky he was not having to prospect to become a member of the club. He shot a guy protecting Jaz and JD, which got him patched right in.

Big Daddy, the club’s bouncer, was standing at the door with his arms crossed over his chest and his legs poised in a wide stance. He was well over six feet tall and had muscles on top of muscles. With his bald head, nasty scar near his left eye, and tattooed neck and arms, he was a scary sight. He fist-bumped Mick.

“Hey bro, glad to see you’re back. I straightened the place out for ya,” he bragged. “Had to bang some heads around, but they got the message quick enough.”

“Yeah?” Mick laughed. “I heard you did a bang-up job. Thanks.”

As Mick walked closer to the bar, he caught a whiff of a delicious smell lingering in the air. He was glad to see their cook followed his advice and kept butter and onions simmering on the stove. It never failed to make him hungry and it seemed to work like a charm in the bar. The customer food orders picked up substantially in a short amount of time.

Danny happened to be tending bar that night and put a beer down in front of Mick. He listened as Danny told him about one of the barmaids, Patty, soliciting the male customers for sex. Danny said he’d given her a warning but that didn’t stop her. Mick said he would handle it. They’d had a problem with prostitutes trying to work out of The Den a few months back and the last thing the club needed was that shit starting up again. After listening to him finish the update, Mick was relieved there were no major problems he needed to deal with.

He looked around and noticed some of his brothers sitting further down the bar. He got up to join them. Drifter, Rebel, and Spokes were sitting at the bar watching the dancer on stage. Lila was a club girl who was looking to become an old lady. She had hopes of latching on to one of the brothers permanently, but none of the bros wanted to hook up with a used-up slut. She hounded JD for a long time until he made Jaz his old lady, but she didn’t stop flirting with him completely until Jaz got pissed off and slugged her.

Lately, she’d been hitting on Mick, trying her luck with him. When she was done dancing she headed straight for him and started rubbing her hands all over his back. Mick turned around, his voice harsh when he told her to take a hike. She pouted and walked towards Drifter, hoping he would take an interest in her.

Drifter gave her a welcoming smile, then stood up and told her to lead the way. Lila led him into one of the back rooms and planned on giving Drifter a lap dance he’d never forget. She wanted him so hot and panting that he’d always come back to her for more and hopefully make her his old lady. She pushed him down onto a couch that was set against the wall and took off her robe. She was barely covered by the skimpy G-string outfit that she had danced in.

“What the fuck, Lila? I don’t have time to fool around here. Just need my pipes cleaned. Get that mouth on my cock and suck it good. I got places I need to be.”

Lila opened her mouth to complain, then thought better of it. She needed her job dancing at the bar. The money was fantastic and if she had to give head to the brothers to keep it, she would.

Drifter walked out of the back room and went back over to join his bros. “Damn, she’s gettin’ good at suckin’ dick.”

“She should be good at it,” Rebel said with a smirk. “She’s had enough practice.”

Mick called over Jackie, a friendly barmaid who’d worked there since the bar opened, and asked her to point out which girl was Patty. Jackie thanked Mick for handling the situation. She told Mick how Patty made it bad for her and the other girls working there. The men figured they were all prostitutes and got really aggressive with them at times. She pointed to a pretty girl with a skimpier outfit than the other barmaids. Her hot pants showed some of her lower ass cheeks and her top was just about covering her nipples.

Mick walked on over and asked her to join him in his office. She looked him up and down and smiled. “Right behind ya, big boy.”

When Mick left the office door open, she went to close it. “Ah, ah, leave it open. This won’t take long.”

“I’m good with an audience, sugar.” Patty winked and walked over to Mick, opening up a button on her top.

Before she got any more buttons undone, Mick stated, “You’re fired. Grab your gear and get out of here now and don’t let me see your face in here again. And if any of your friends are thinking of doing business here, tell them to forget it. Women or not, won’t matter to me and my brothers.” Mick leveled a cold, hard stare at her. “You get my drift,
sugar
?” he said mockingly.

“Y-Yeah, I hear you,” Patty stammered. She turned and hurried out the door.

Mick sat down behind his desk. “A chipmunk, then a prostitute,” he mumbled to himself. “What the fuck’s next?”

He figured he might as well go over the bar’s inventory while he was there. Everything looked good. Danny was doing a great job even taking on more than he should. Mick decided he was going to see about getting him a raise.

The next morning, Mick headed out to see Renee. She’d had plenty of time to think over what he’d said about him being in his kid’s life. He was going to demand she let him visit with his son. When he pulled up into the driveway of her house, the door opened and her father came outside. Seeing the furrowed brow and narrowed eyes on Charlie’s face only made Mick more determined. He walked up the steps onto the porch until he stood right in front of him. “I’m here to talk with Renee. Is she around?”

Her father shook his head. “Renee isn’t home. She went to visit a friend. Look Mick, I know you’re the father of my grandson, but you have to leave her alone. She’s happy now. She hasn’t had a nightmare in a long time.” At Mick’s frown, Charlie continued on. “Yes, she’s been having nightmares of her son holding a gun in his hand and killing people. So you see, Mick, you have got to stay away. You’re no good for Renee.” Charlie looked into Mick’s eyes pleadingly. “I’m begging you, leave my daughter alone. Let her be happy.”

“Hey man, nothin’ I can do about all that shit that’s been goin’ on with the dreams and stuff, but that’s my kid. I know she doesn’t want anything to do with me or my club and I respect that.” Mick gave Charlie a hard stare. “But I won’t be shut out of my son’s life. Tell Renee I was by to see her. Tell her I
will
be back.” Mick turned around and walked down the steps to his bike. He got on and rode out.

Charlie stood there watching Mick ride away. No way was he going to tell Renee that Mick came by to see her. That news would only upset her and she didn’t need more confusion clouding her mind these days. No. His daughter wasn’t going to live with a lawless biker. He wanted better for Renee and his grandson.

Mick left Renee’s and headed over to Jaz’s house, needing someone to talk to. Taking the steps two at a time, he opened the door and walked in to hear “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses blasting on the radio. Jaz was in the kitchen bent over the counter, busily chopping something up. He walked up behind her and grabbed her from behind. He pinned her arms to her sides and his hand covered her mouth so she couldn’t scream. Jaz struggled furiously to no avail. When Mick let her go, she jumped back a step and turned. She drew back her fist and landed a powerful punch to Mick’s solar plexus. He let out a whoosh of air.

“Damn it, Jaz. I see JD has been training you about where to hit a guy. Your door was unlocked and with that loud music, you didn’t even hear me entering your house. You should know better than that. You’re JD’s old lady now and you have to be careful. He’s made a lot of enemies over the years. Enemies that would love nothing better than to hurt you to get back at him.”

Jaz was bent over trying to catch her breath. “Did you have to give me a near heart attack, Mick?”

“Just wanted to leave a lasting impression, darlin’. Maybe you’ll be more careful from now on.”

“I guess I forgot to lock it when I went out to the mailbox earlier.” Calming down somewhat, she motioned to a chair. “Sit down and I’ll make you something to eat,” Jaz continued with a light sarcasm in her voice, “although I should let you starve after your little stunt.”

Mick sat down and asked for a beer. Jaz put a ham sandwich down in front of him along with the beer. She knew from the way he was twirling his beer bottle around that something was troubling him. He was making her nervous.

“What’s going on Mick? Are you in some kind of trouble?”

Mick steadied the beer bottle on the table. “I was just over to Renee’s house. She wasn’t home, but her dad sure was. He asked me to leave Renee alone.”

Jaz sat down next to Mick and looked at him with a curious stare. “Why the sudden interest, Mick?” Jaz asked, harsher than she intended. She was pissed at Mick for totally ignoring Renee. “I mean, why now? You clearly didn’t want anything to do with Renee or your son earlier. Now you’re stepping up? What changed your mind?”

“I can understand you being mad at me, Jaz, but I had a hard time with this father thing. Now that I’ve had time to think things through, I want to be there for my son. I never told you about my life growing up. My dad was always away from home with his job, so what do I know about being a father? Truthfully, just the thought of it scares the shit out of me. But I don’t want my kid feeling neglected like I felt. Maybe Renee and I will never be together, but I do want to be in my little guy’s life.”

Teary-eyed, Jaz got up and threw her arms around Mick. “You know I love you Mick, and I’m glad you finally came to terms with all this. I’m here whenever you need someone to talk to, remember that. Have you seen your son yet?”

“Yeah, once, and I’m lucky for that. I happened to bump into Renee in town. She had no choice but to let me see Michael. He was sleeping in the carriage she was pushing. The way Renee is against me because of the club, I know she wasn’t too happy about it either.”

Jaz’s eyes began to gleam. “Did you see how handsome he is? I just love him to pieces, and he has your eyes and nose, but of course I would never tell Renee that,” Jaz said with a chuckle. She rubbed her hand over his arm. “Don’t worry Mick, I’m sure she will change her attitude over time.” Jaz tried to sound convincing and hoped she was right, but she knew she failed when Mick didn’t even crack a smile.

JD walked into the kitchen. “Jaz! Get your hand off of Mick!”

Jaz shot JD an amused look. “Oh shush, JD.” Jaz patted the chair next to her. “Sit down and join us for lunch.”

JD walked over to Jaz, picked her up, then sat her down in a chair opposite of Mick. Jaz started laughing. JD was so possessive and jealous and she loved that about him. JD glared at Mick. “Why are you here?”

Mick slugged down the remainder of his beer and stood up. “Just stopped by to talk to Jaz, but I have to leave now. Got some things I need to take care of.” Mick winked at Jaz, then left.
