Fanny’s second dearest wish was granted her after all the toasts had been pronounced. She played Gabrielle on the stage the duchess had commissioned. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, she waxed even more dramatic than usual.
After taking her bows on the outdoor stage, Fanny had to walk through the garden to return to the audience. A sheet of paper fluttered from the branch of the apple tree.
Smiling, she took it down and read the epistle:
