She walked over to the bed and avoided his kicking legs.  “Shh.  Don’t swear.  It’s not nice,” she scolded, then leaned down and kissed him on the mouth.  “You won’t be left like this for long, don’t worry.”

“Em, you have no idea the revenge that I can exact.”

“I’m looking forward to it, Detective.  Besides, you said you were the guy who was gonna, and I quote, ‘give me the control I need in the bedroom but who’s also going to teach me how to let go and have fun and let loose at the same time.’  Then I said, ‘Are you seriously for real?’ and you said, ‘Of course.’  Then I said –”

He let out a half growl, half groan.

“Oh, Detective.  You’re so cute when you pout,” she said, patting his cheek and leaning down to nibble on his mouth.  He was just too irresistible.  He looked like he didn’t know if he wanted to kill her or fuck her.  “Who would you like me to call to come to your rescue?” she continued.  “Let’s see.  Your cousin or your partner.  I’ll let you choose.  Isn’t that nice of me?  Or would you rather I just leave you here to figure your way out of this on your own?  Hmm, decisions, decisions,” she said, tapping her finger on her chin.  “What would a crazy bitch do?”

“Emily, I promise you, when you least expect it –”

“Okay, I guess you’re gonna leave the choice up to me.”  She scrolled through his contacts, began dialing his phone, put it on speaker, and then left it on his chest.

She turned and began walking out of the room to retrieve her clothes in the hallway.  “Thank you for a wonderful evening, Detective.  I’ll see you on Saturday at the training,” she called out over her shoulder.

“Emily!” he yelled.  She heard a voice on the phone, then Mike saying, “Lacey?  Hold on.  Shit.  Just gimme a sec,” she heard him say.  She chuckled.  This was the most fun she’d had in a very, very long time.  “Emily!” he yelled again, this time with a warning tone in his voice.

She laughed and walked out making sure the doorknob was locked and the door pulled closed behind her.  Then she jogged down the stairs to catch a cab.  Smiling the whole way.

……

The next afternoon, Emily was still chuckling over the state in which she
’d left the good detective.  She hadn’t heard from him which made her a little anxious about retribution, but to her it had been worth it.

What had really taken over her mind
were the memories of the hour before she’d left him.  If she didn’t watch herself, she’d turn into a giddy junior high girl.  Not only had she never had sex the likes of which was had last night, she was pretty confident that it was just as good for him as it had been for her.  She tried to control the dreamy sigh escaping her lips.  Again.

Time to get a hold of yourself, Emily.

The knock on her open office door startled her then she smiled as she saw Ollie in the doorway.  Ollie, one of the IT guys for Mitchell, Horton and Rose, the law firm where she worked, had become a great work friend.  He had helped her out a few weeks back when Ayanna had been receiving some threatening emails and had been able to determine their origin enabling them to go to the police.

As a thank you for his efforts, he’d finagled the date with her to the art showing.  She was fairly certain he had a crush on her, but she felt nothing but friendship for him.

“Thanks for coming up, Ollie.”

“No problem.  You havin’ an issue with the laptop, or is this about the email you sent?”

“It’s about the email.  Do you have a sec?  I was just about to take lunch.”  She directed him to the chair in front of her desk.  It was a small office, but it was all hers.

“Sure.”  He paused.  “The program sounds like a good one.”

“Yeah.  I think it’s promising, if I may say so myself,” she smiled.  “Are you interested?”

He hesitated.  “I don’t know.  You know I’m not good with this kind of stuff.  Talking in front of people,” he shrugged and turned a little red.

“I know it’s not your forte, but there are bound to be some boys who have your interests and have similar likes and dislikes.  Will you at least think about it?”

“I’ll think about it.  Maybe I could come in and watch one of the other guys instruct just to see what’s needed on my part.  I kinda wanna see what it’s all about first.”

“That’s fair.  As soon as everything is up and running, I’ll let you know and you can pop in on one of them.  Starting in October, it looks like it will be every Friday the last period of the day.  Probably around 2pm.  I’ve already talked to Mr. Mitchell about the program and told him I may be asking some guys from work to be a part of it.  He’s aware that some people might be taking late lunch hours to do the volunteer work and he’s fine with it.  In fact, he’s been very supportive.”

“That’s good.  Okay.  Like I said, I’ll think about it.”  He looked like he was about to say more, but her intercom interrupted them.

“Um, excuse me.  Emily?”  It was Terrence, the paralegal who Emily shared with two other lawyers on the floor.  His desk was outside her area and he usually screened her calls as well as the other attorneys he assisted.

“Hi, Terrence.  What’s up?”

“You have a delivery, but it’s a little too big for me to bring in.”  His voice had a smile in it.

Dread and anticipation ran down her spine, knowing full well that this may very well be the retribution she’d been wondering about.

“Excuse me for a sec, Ollie.  I’ll be right back.” She let out a sigh and began to prepare herself as she walked to her door.

Standing in the waiting area was a man dressed as a cop with a bouquet of yellow and red sunflowers
as well as a CD player.  It was very obvious he was in costume.  Dear Lord.  Had he ordered a stripper?  She would kill him, slowly.  She walked over to the man just as he looked up and smiled.

“Are you Emily White?”

“That depends,” she said drolly.

He chuckled.  “You’re exactly as he said you’d be.”

“You’re here to deliver a message, I presume?”

Office workers had already begun to gather to see what all of the hub-bub was about and Ollie stood in her doorway.  As if that wasn’t bad enough, Joe Mitchell, one of the partners came out of his office.  All smiles.

“What’s this?  Are we gonna have some entertainment this afternoon?” he laughed.

The cop leaned forward and spoke quietly.  “I was told that you could seriously hurt me, but Detective Callahan said that you needed to suck it up and take it like a man.  And not to hurt me.”  He smiled sheepishly.  “He also said that I needed to,” he cleared his throat, “um, cuff you to the chair.”

She nodded.  “I’m sure he did.  Do you want to keep your hands?”

“Yes, please.  He said not to be a spoilsport.”

“Of course he did,” she grumbled.  “Let’s just get this over with, okay?”  She lifted her voice to speak to Terrence, “And Terrence, if one article of clothing comes off, call security.”

“No way!”  This yell came from Mr. Mitchell, her openly gay boss who was middle aged and in excellent shape.  “We haven’t had this much fun in years, White!”

She groaned and sat down, prepared to take whatever was planned.

“I’m not a stripper,” the cop laughed.  “I’m here to sing you a message from one Detective Callahan.  You see everyone, apparently Miss White has been a very bad girl and the detective says she needs to be cuffed and given her punishment.

Whoops and hollers came from her co-workers, especially those of the female persuasion.

An embarrassed smile played on Emily’s lips as she sat in a chair that Terrence wheeled over.  He was having a grand old time as they all were.  The cop leaned over and cuffed her hands behind her back as he whispered, “Thank you for not killing me.”

“The day isn’t over yet.”

“Oh, God –”

“Relax, sweet cheeks.  You’re not the one I’m gonna kill.”

He laughed in relief and reached back to the neighboring desk and hit a button on the portable CD player he brought with him. The room was immediately filled with old school Michael Jackson.

The Way You Make Me Feel
began playing while the police officer gyrated around her then began singing:
Hey pretty baby with the high heels on, you give me fever like I’ve never ever known.  You’re just a product of loveliness, I like the groove of your walk, your talk, your dress.  I feel your fever from miles around, I’ll pick you up in my bike and we’ll paint the town.  Just kiss me baby and tell me twice, that you’re the one for me.

The whole office was woo-hooing, clapping, dancing, and singing along with the chorus while Emily tried to duck her head.  Knowing the song well, she noted the slight chang
e to the words, ‘car’ to ‘bike’.

It was such a shame, she thought dryly.  She really liked having sex with him.  Too bad he was going to be dead soon.

The way you make me feel...You really turn me on...You knock me offa my feet now, baby...My lonely days are gone...

Emily sighed through the experience, feeling a whole range of emotions:  giddy, embarrassed, aroused, annoyed.  But the one that snuck up on her unexpectedly was…happy.  Where that emotion came from, she’d never know, but she felt a bubbling laughter come up from her gut as she let out what could only be described as a giggle.  She never giggled.

She was a disciplined hard working attorney, known for her sarcasm and dry wit.  She volunteered, she trained in Krav Maga, she worked hard, and she was a serious minded woman.  But there was something about the detective. Other than her family and closest friends, he was the only one who asked her inner self to come out and play.  She didn’t usually inspire that feeling in people.

The detective was just so over the top that as much as she hated to admit it, her aunt was right:  She’d have a lot of fun with him.

Before the final chorus, she smirked as the cop sang:
I swear I’m keeping you satisfied, ’cause you’re the one for me…

She endured the final chorus, the gyrating hips in front of her face and the transformation of a law office into a dance club.  When the singing telegram was finally over, the office floor erupted into yells, laughter, and applause.  Once she was uncuffed from the chair, the cop kneeled in front of her and the noise died down as they prepared for what looked like the second act.

She groaned as he took out a piece of paper from his back pocket and cleared his throat to read.

“Detective Callahan, your Big Papa Pookie Bear, would like to wish a very Happy Anniversary to his Gorgeous Counselor, his Ginger Cookie, his Gumdrop Cutie pie –”

She put up her hand with a wince.  “Okay, we get it. Thanks,” she said, noting all of the GC combinations that were used.  “Let me go grab a tip for you so you can be on your way.”

“That’s all been taken care of,” he smiled.

“Your anniversary?  I didn’t know it was your anniversary!  For what?  None of us even knew you were dating anyone!” Terrence yelled.  “Especially not a Big Papa Pookie Bear.  You sneaky little Ginger Cookie.  You
are
a bad girl!” he laughed.

“I have a card for you.  He asked me to give it to you.”  The cop got up and retrieved it along with the bouquet of sunflowers from the desk where the CD player was and handed them to her with a bow, still speaking on behalf of the detective.  “To many more perfect weekends like this past one.”

“What did you
do
to him this weekend, Gumdrop Cutie pie?  We want details!”

With that, the performer took his bow in front of the group and accepted photos with some of the female employees who were still laughing over the last ten minutes.

Visions of murder floated through her head as she plastered a smile on her face and wondered where she could hide the body.

“Thanks for the entertainment this afternoon, Emily.  I think it’s safe to say this stodgy old law firm hasn’t seen this much fun in, well, ever.”  Joe Mitchell had a huge grin on his face.  “And we’re all looking forward to meeting this Detective Callahan.  Or should we call him Big Papa Pookie Bear?”

“He is so dead,” she muttered.

Joe threw his head back and gut laughed.  “Why do I get the feeling that he would look forward to being maimed by you?”

“Because he’s a sick twisted man.”

“Maybe that’s just what you need,” he chuckled.  “He seems to be the yin to your yang.  I for one can’t wait to meet him.”

“I’m sure with my luck he’ll show up unexpectedly one of these days,” she muttered.

“I’ll look forward to it,” he laughed again.

She made a beeline to her office only to be intercepted by Ollie, who was still standing in her doorway.

“That was the guy from the art showing a few weeks ago, right?”

“Yeah,” she cleared her throat.

“You should’ve told me you were seeing someone.  I could tell there was something going on between you two, but since he had a date with him, I assumed –”

“We weren’t seeing each other.  We’re
not
seeing each other.  This was just his idea of a joke.”

“Well, I may not be the most experienced of men, but any guy who goes to this length to play a joke on a woman has to have some kind of interest, I would think,” Ollie mumbled, looking embarrassed.  He was such an awkward guy.  Sweet, but awkward.
