HOW TO PLAY| One Player

1.
There are 120 picture puzzles in this book. The first 20 puzzles serve as a warm up to help your mind relax, concentrate, and learn how to solve the this type of puzzles.

2.
Keeping time is optional. If you just want to relax deeply, and experience a wonderful feeling of focus and concentration don’t worry about timing yourself on doing the puzzles. Just take as much time as you need to think carefully about each puzzle.

3.
If you want to challenge yourself, use a timer to keep time! Try to solve the puzzles as quickly as possible and write down your score (in seconds). Here is a score keeping example below (of course, you can create more categories if you wish):

4.
You can choose not to include the first 20 puzzles in your scores because this section is mainly a warm-up exercise.

5.
After finishing the book you can then recommend it to friends and family and ask them to keep scores. This way you can compare scores and be proud if you did better than the others!

HOW TO PLAY| Two or More Players

1.
Use a big-screen device for everyone’s reading convenience.

2.
There are 120 picture puzzles in this book. The first 20 puzzles serve as a warm up to help the players learn how to solve this type of puzzles. We recommend that you use this section only as a warm up exercise for all and start the “real” game after the first 20 puzzles.

3.
Each player will need a sheet of paper and a pen.

4.
For each puzzle, each player has to
figure out the hidden phrase
and
write it down as fast as possible
on his/her sheet of paper
. Then he has to
place the paper face down
in the middle of the table.

5.
Your goal is
to be the first player who puts his paper on the table.

6.
The player that answers the riddle second, will put his paper face down above the first player’s paper and so on (the player that answers third, will put his paper face down above the other players’ papers …)

7.
After all players put their papers on the table, you click on “See Answer” to check the answer. Then read the answers on the papers.

8.
The winner is the first player to have placed his paper on the table, IF his/her answer is correct. If it is not, then the winner is the second player to have placed his paper on the table, IF his/her answer is correct. (If it is not, the third player has his chance and so on…).

9.
Therefore, to be the winner, you not only have to think fast and be the first to write down the answer, but you also have to be sure that your answer is correct.

10.
Make sure that one of you keeps score (name of the player who won in each round). When you finish the book, the big winner will be the player who won the most rounds.

TIPS FOR SOLVING THE PUZZLES

Before starting, read this list of tips that will help you understand the common strategies of solving these word picture puzzles.

1.
Positioning of letters:
Observe the position of the letters as they can reveal words and meanings. For example, do you notice the word “friend” in “NEFRIENDED” ? It is between (in) the syllables NE,  ED, so we can guess that the hidden phrase is Friend in Need.

2. Relative positioning of words:
Is one word above another? This might indicate a hidden “on” or “above” word. For example the words below represent the phrase “Hands-on experience”.

3.
Direction of letters:
Observe the direction of the given words. Is the word going up? Down? Backwards? If yes, this is one more clue for you. For example, the word “TOWN” below indicate a downwards direction, so we can guess that the phrase is “DOWN TOWN”:

T

O

W

N

4.
Repeated words:
Is a word repeated several times? Count the words and use this number as a clue. For example “LATE LATE” is a representation of the phrase “too late”.

5. Arrows:
If there is an arrow pointing out something, then focusing on that spot will help you decipher the picture.

6. Style and size of letters:
Is a word too big? Too small? Are the letters too fat or too thin? Use this a clue!

7. Focus on the sound:
Sometimes the picture uses a word that sounds similar to the hidden word. For example, if you see the word “cats” have in mind other words with a similar sound, such as “catch”. Sometimes it helps if you describe out loud what you see. For example: “L EEEEEE”   sounds like el+E’s -> Elise  so you may have found a name as a clue!

You will practice these tips and learn even more strategies in the warm up section (first 20 puzzles).

That’s all!

Turn the next page and good luck!
