Barry held his hands out in a stop motion. “It’s too thin, hold here,” he said, his inner cop coming out, the authority in his voice clear.

Tray reached the hole, the first boy was already under. With so many clothes on, and nothing to grab onto, it was difficult to stay afloat. The driver was clinging to the machine and being dragged down with it. He tore desperately at the scarf around his neck and Tray saw the end of it was wound around the front handlebar. Lying on the ice to spread his weight, his extended the shovel. “Grab the shovel,” he yelled.

The kid stretched, his fingertips just brushing the edge of the handle. Tray pushed himself a few inches forward. Another crack rang through the air. The boy wrapped his hands around the handle and Tray started to inch his way backward. But it was no good, the weight of the machine pulled him down and he couldn’t hold him. The kid screamed and flailed until his head went under. Tray pushed backward on the ice, stood, and ripped off his hat and down jacket.

“Don’t go in until we get a rope,” yelled Barry.

“There’s no time. Pass me your knife.” Barry slid his fishing knife over the ice. Tray scooped it up, unsheathed it and dove into the hole. The shock of the cold ripped through his senses, the water was eerily quiet and dark. The world fell away behind him. Beneath him, the kid was tearing frantically at the scarf. He kicked downward and slashed the blade across the white material tethering the kid to the snowmobile. The kid immediately kicked upwards to the surface, Tray following. As he broke the surface, he saw Barry lying on the ice, extending the handle of the shovel.

“Grab the shovel, kid, I’ll pull you out.” The boy’s hands were shaking so badly he had trouble closing them around the wooden handle. Tray wanted to push him up, but the clock was ticking. He was going to lose the other boy if he didn’t go now.

“I’m going back down.”

“Wait, I need to tether you.”

“It’s not deep, I think I can see the bottom, I need to go now.” Tray dove again. Within seconds, the water lay dead calm and dark behind him.
