Chapter One

“Whoa there boy, whoa!” Abby
whispered to the startled chestnut colored horse beneath her as he snorted
loudly.

Abby pulled on his reins and managed
to bring him to a gentle stop. She dismounted and ran across toward the
offending vehicle that had caused her horse to act so nervously.

“What the fuck are you doing?”
she yelled into the jeep’s open window.

“Sorry, I was only driving,” a
deep voice answered, and as Abby peered into the vehicle, she found herself
looking into a pair of pale blue eyes.

“Driving way too fast. This is
a ranch with animals present. You need to be more careful,” she replied,
determined to keep going even though she felt herself melting under the
stranger’s blue eyes as they stared at her.

“I’ll remember that next time,”
he said stepping out from his jeep.

She watched as he walked around
the vehicle toward her with his hand outstretched. He was in his late twenties,
6’1” with a muscular physique.

“I don’t shake the hand of some
guy that’s upset my Murphy, so take your pompous hand and clear off. This
here’s private property, you know,” he’d really pissed her off by upsetting
Murphy. He’d been her horse since she was a young girl and nobody upset him.

She climbed back up into the
saddle and clicked her tongue for Murphy to walk on, which he did very
obediently.

Abby was only 5’4” and slim
with beautiful red wavy hair that cascaded down her slender back. Her temper
matched her fiery hair. Her green eyes were dark and reminiscent of emeralds;
she was a true natural beauty and a total tomboy.

She’d grown up with two older
brothers and had learned how to compensate for her lack of physical strength
with her sharp tongue; her sarcastic and snide attitude had brought a lot of
trouble Abby’s way throughout her young life. She knew how to look after
herself, and for a 21-year-old girl, she was very self-confident and
independent.

This probably explained why
she’d not had many serious relationships. She never allowed guys to grow close
to her. If she kept her walls up, nobody could knock them down.

Her folks lived in Rock
Springs, Wyoming and she’d left home at the tender age of 16-years-old, as the
farmhand job had come up on the Lone-Oak Ranch. She’d managed to convince her
folks that it was a terrific opportunity for her.

Horse riding had been in her
blood since she was little and her dad had paid for riding lessons for her as a
child, which she’d loved and excelled at. She’d left school early to accept the
position on the understanding that she’d keep her education up with private
tuition; however, this slipped and she threw herself into life as a farmhand.

It was a live-in position and
she had her own bungalow behind the main farmhouse that suited Abby just fine.
There was a stable for Murphy nearby, which he shared with two other horses
belonging to the ranch.

The years she’d spent at the
ranch had been some of the happiest in her life, but, now things were set to
change.

The ranch had been sold; Abby
knew this much and that was about it apart from the fact that the new owners
were meant to be dropping by soon to introduce themselves. Abby was hoping for
a nice family to take it on, perhaps with one or two teenagers within the family
as that’d be so cool.

“There we go boy,” she
whispered in Murphy’s big chestnut ear as she rubbed his smooth body down with
a towel. He neighed his appreciation and wandered off to greet the other horses
in the stable.

Abby ached all over; it’d been
a long, tiring day on the ranch. The old owners had left that morning and it
was only her and a couple of the other farmhands left to tend to the animals
until the new owners arrived. It was now approaching late afternoon and it was
a hot day during August.

She went into her bungalow and
opened the windows wide, enjoying the rush of cool air as she began to strip by
the open window; the bungalow was ideally suited. Although it sat behind the
main house, it wasn’t overlooked at all.

She relished the privacy as she
kicked off her burnt-red colored cowgirl boots and blue Wrangler jeans
revealing her tanned and toned legs. Next off were her socks, and as she padded
barefoot into the kitchen. She giggled as the deep pile plush carpet in the
lounge tickled her dainty feet.

Boots were her favorite
footwear for riding, even in the height of the summer as the soft leather moved
with her legs as she rode and offering her much comfort.

Abby lifted an ice-cold pop
from the fridge and placed the can on the small kitchen table unbuttoning her
blue and gray-checkered shirt as she did so. She removed the item of clothing
from her slender shoulders and lifted her brown raffia cowgirl hat off her
head, shaking her flame colored hair and enjoying the sensation of the soft
waves brushing her now naked shoulders.

The turquoise blue deep plunge
bra she was wearing accentuated her natural curves beautifully, and the
matching Chantilly lace panties hugged her slender hips and caressed her
satin-smooth skin.

Abby felt relaxed as she stood
in her lingerie and sipped her pop.

The peace and quiet in the
bungalow was welcomed after her busy day of helping the other farmhands with
cattle branding. She liked the other workers on the ranch. They were two older
guys who, like her, had been there for several years now.

Abby was always chosen to ride
up front and lead whenever there was a reason to move the cattle, which was
generally to offer them a new pasture choice. She loved this, as it was an
excuse for a change of scenery, and of course, to do what Abby loved most,
ride. She’d all the attire needed and was up there with the best of the cowboy
riders.

She could even throw a rope to
catch wandering cattle if needed, and she had her own lariat or rope for such
purposes. She thought back to the first time she’d used it and a smile played
on her soft lips as she remembered one of the farmhands teaching her how to
throw it properly. The only thing Abby managed to actually rope was herself!

A loud knock on the kitchen
window made her jump and as she spun around in her lingerie to look, she saw
the same blue eyes looking at her that she’d seen earlier.

“What the fuck man? I already
told you this was private property, and boy are you trespassing now!” she
screamed as she held her shirt against her bra-clad cleavage in an attempt to
cover some of herself up.

The owner of the blue eyes
smiled shyly, and she could see that, however much a pain in the ass he was, he
was also very handsome. He had short jet-black hair and a chiseled jaw line
with defined high cheekbones, his smile was lopsided and so sexy. Abby was
aware she was staring and suddenly remembered her scantily clad appearance.

“Can I talk to you?” he asked
as she noticed his eyes dropping their gaze down to her bare legs and then
upward again to her face, pausing momentarily as they rested on her lace
panties.

“Why?” she asked, trying
desperately to entice her shirt to cover up the whole of her slim body. It
wasn’t working, and however, hard she tried her panties were still on show.

“I need to explain something to
you,” he answered, as his blue eyes now remained focused on her face.

“I’ve no idea who you are and
I’m all but naked here, so just avert your eyes while I get dressed and then
I’ll come out there,” she snapped, regretting her abrasive tone immediately as
she saw the hurt expression on his handsome face.

“Fine!” he replied as he turned
around and folded his arms.

“Seriously! I just got
undressed,” Abby muttered to herself as she picked up her discarded jeans and
started to pull them up over her slim hips. She threw the shirt on, and leaving
it undone, she pulled it around herself before opening the door.

He turned as soon as the door
opened and smiled at her. She noticed how his eyes crinkled at the corners when
he smiled, and how incredibly hot his lopsided smile was close-up.

Remembering her frustration
with him for trespassing, she asked, “So, what’s this urgent explanation that
you’ve got for me then?”

He looked straight at her and
extending his hand her way, as he’d done earlier, he replied, “I’m Tyler Moore
and I’m the new owner of the Lone-Oak Ranch. I think we got off on the wrong
foot.”

“Shit they sold the place to a
city boy?” she said as she ignored his hand once again.

“What makes you think I’m a
city boy?”

“Don’t tell me you’re not.
You’ve got ‘city’ written all over you. Bet you’ve never been on a ranch, let
alone worked one before,” Abby stood barefoot in the bungalow’s doorway with
her loose shirt pulled around her and her jeans still undone. Her red hair was
a tumbling mass of waves around her shoulders.

His cheeks reddened, which she
found to be quite an endearing feature as not many guys became embarrassed
these days.

“Yeah, you’ve got me all worked
out. This is the first time I’ve set foot on a ranch. I inherited it from some
distant relative I’ve never even heard of and I had two choices. Come here or
stay in my dump of an apartment back in Torrington,” he pushed his hands into
his jeans’ pockets when he realized she wasn’t going to shake hands with him.

She shot him a snide look and
said, “You don’t just move into a ranch with no comprehension of how it works
just because the farmhouse is a better deal than your apartment!”

“You speak your mind don’t
you?” he asked as he shuffled his feet and covered his nice orange and white
sneakers in dust.

“Honesty’s the best policy in
my world. I give you a week tops before you literally fall on your ass and sell
the place,” she retorted as the light summer’s breeze teased her flimsy cotton
shirt until it opened.

Tyler’s blue eyes instantly
dropped to her lace bra-clad breasts and his cheeks reddened even more, and as
much as Abby hated all that he stood for, she couldn’t help but feel sexually
aroused by his attention. It’d been a long time since anyone had looked at her
with longing and hunger in their eyes, too long.

He raised his head, and as he
caught her looking at him, he flashed her a saucy smile, “Would it be too much
of an imposition if I asked your name?”

“Yes it would!” she replied,
realizing that she was enjoying their cat and mouse game. Abby turned and went
back inside, but before closing the door, she said one word to him, “Abby!”

She watched him walking away
through the kitchen window with her green eyes fixated on his tight buttocks.
He turned and waved and now it was her turn to feel the warmth of embarrassment
on her cheeks as she felt herself blushing.
