“Is this ok?”

“Oh god, yes.  It’s more than ok.”

“What about this?”

His hand slid up even further, unsnapping her bra deftly.  She had never been with a man who was this slick, a man that made her feel so desirable.  She didn’t even answer him this time, but instead moved her hand to his chest, beginning to unbutton it as she kissed him with a renewed vigor.  Her lips parted ever so slightly, which was more than enough for his tongue to slip into her mouth.  He tugged her shirt up and over her head, then moved to her jeans, which she was more than happy for him to take off.  Very quickly she stood in front of him without a stitch of clothing on and he held her out at arm’s length, looking her up and down slowly.

“What are you doing?”

“”Looking at you,” he said in a thick, throaty voice that sent chills up her entire body, “Jesus, you’re beautiful.  You know that Kara?”

“Thank you.”

“Tell me what you want.”

“I want you to touch me.”

That was something he seemed entirely fine with doing and after quickly removing the rest of his clothing, he laid her gently on her back across the bed.  Her breasts were heaving, her legs quivering in anticipation, and he moved between her legs on his knees, one hand moving down between her already slick thighs.  His strong, sure fingers found that heart of her that was able to bring her the most intense pleasure imaginable and her entire body went electric.  Her back arched up off of the bed, rising so suddenly and so completely that she found herself almost I’m a sitting position.  From there she had the most perfect view of his face as he was pleasuring her, something that made the experience all the more intense.  She could see the thick length of him extended, see how her pleasure alone was enough to so completely arouse him, and she fell backwards on the bed, writhing in ecstasy.  It was more than she could take; the clandestine feeling of this coming together, the intensity with which she had longed for this man before even being fully aware of that want.  She felt her toes begin to curl and her entire body begin to shake as her eyes rolled back into her head and she let out a guttural moan of pleasure unlike anything she had ever heard escape her lips before.  It came upon her in wave after wave, like the ripples in a previously placid pond, until she was almost in pain from the intensity of what he was making her body feel.  It was amazing, how fine the line between pleasure and pain really was, and the only thing she knew with complete certainty was that she wanted to make him feel that delicious contradiction as well.  As his hands continued to move over her body, she moved her own hand down between her legs, down between
his
legs, and took his throbbing member into her palm, reveling at the gasp of pleasure he let out when she did so.  She could not wait, not a moment longer.  Without ever looking away from his face she guided him inside of her and moaned at the sensation of him filling her up so completely.  She wrapped her legs around his as he moved over her, thrusting his hips slowly, teasingly, watching her every reaction.  It was shocking to her how well their two bodies fit together and she threw her arms up over her head, grabbing onto the comforter for some kind of leverage to help her meet his each and every movement.  His strokes quickly became more urgent, his hips picking up speed as she rocked her own in time.  If she had ever really left the orgasmic state he had put her into, which was uncertain that she had, she could feel it beginning to rise up in her loins once again; that fire for which there was no other match.  Her back arched again, this time pushing her breasts into his chest, and her arms came down and wrapped around him, nails digging into his back so that she was sure it would leave a mark.  He didn’t seem to mind.  On the contrary, he let out a grunt of gratification that sent her over the edge entirely.  Her entire body hummed with this new orgasm, this one even stronger than the last, and behind her closed lids she began to see stars.  She had no idea how loud she was being but she was glad they were in a hotel; she would never be able to look her neighbors in the face again had she been at home.  Through the ringing in her ears she could hear him cry out as well and felt his body begin to shake uncontrollably.  Then he collapsed down on top of her, his head laying directly over her heart as it beat for him like a drum.  They staid like that for some amount of time she would never be able to determine, for long enough that she felt her eyes grow heavy and her mind begin to drift.  For the first time in a long time, since before moving from Texas even, she felt completely content and at home inside of her own skin.  At some point she felt him roll off and to the side of her, felt his restlessness and knew that it was just who he was.  It didn’t bother her.  It was oddly comforting to know that he was always keeping vigil.  She was almost completely asleep when she heard him answer the phone, his voice breaking slightly with fatigue.

“Williams here.  What?  Are you serious?  How?  Ok, I’ll tell her.  Yes.  Ok.”

Damn.  Everything had been so close to perfect but now she could feel the air change and she knew there was something different now.

“Kara?  Kara, you awake, sugar?”

“Yes, barely.  Is everything ok?”

“It is.  It really is.  They caught the bastard.  It’s over.”

Epilogue

“What’s going on with you, Williams?  You’ve been moping around here for months now.”

“Nothing.  I’m good, just like always.”

“If you say so.  But hey, just in case you’re full of shit, I’ve got an idea.  Why don’t you just fucking
call
her?”

Brent waved his new partner off, ready to get just two minutes to himself.  He said that as if it were some kind of novel idea, as if Brent himself hadn’t thought about doing just that every day of the past two and a half months.  Things had moved beyond quickly after he had received that phone call telling him that the man responsible for Mr. Whitney’s death and for ransacking Kara’s apartment had been caught.  He had not been some mastermind, some monster associated with a mafia boss looking to take down a tycoon.  He had been a disgruntled ex-employee with a frighteningly high IQ and an even more frighteningly large chip on his shoulder.  It had just been Kara’s bad luck that she had been there that night, because the killer was a man who didn’t want to leave any loose ends.  Once they had caught him Kara hadn’t been in any more danger and both she and Brent had been hit with an onslaught of work to wade through.  He had
meant
to call her, had thought about it a hundred times a day, but each day that he didn’t manage to follow through hung on his shoulders like a weight until he had let too much time pass.  He was sure that she wouldn’t want to hear from him anymore.  And so he had tried to put her out of his head but, if he was being honest with himself, he was only white-knuckling it.  He had thought about it long and hard and come to the conclusion that there was no other woman for him; there would never be another woman who made him as happy as she had managed to in such a short amount of time and he had to see her, if only to know for sure that she didn’t feel the same way.  He hoped sincerely that the knowing would give him some kind of peace.

After making the choice to finally act, it was like he moved in a dream.  Each step that would lead him to her apartment was memorized by his muscles and in no amount of time at all he found himself standing outside of her door.  That was when he froze.  What the hell was he
doing
here?  She wasn’t going to want to hear from him, to see him.  At this point she probably hated him for just disappearing the way that he did.  He turned, ready to walk his pathetic self to Malone’s and drink until he forgot her, when he heard the door open behind him.  He froze, having zero idea what to do.

“Brent?  Is that you?”

“I’m afraid so.  I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking.  I’ll go.”

“Oh no you won’t.  No sir.  Not ever again, if I have anything to say about it.”

He only managed to get a step or two towards her before she ran at him, jumping into his arms and delivering him the best kiss he had ever had.  Shit, if she didn’t ever want him to go, he wouldn’t.  This was where he belonged, no question about it.  Finally she pulled back from him, looking at him with a beautiful smile and tears in her eyes.

“What took you so long?”

“I’m pretty stupid.  I figured you knew that by now.”

“Well, that’s true.  So what made you come now?”

“Well,” he said, feeling suddenly shy, “turns out, I don’t think I can live without you.”

“Well that’s good, because I have something I need to tell you, and it’s kind of big.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“How did you know?”

“I didn’t,” he said, kissing every inch of her he could get to, “I was just hoping that was what you were going to say.”
