Prologue

Jesse

Good-bye, high school life, and hello, college living
, I think to myself as I pack the belongings I will need for my upcoming move. I’m officially a high school graduate, and I’ll be moving from Colorado to Indiana and playing softball for Indiana University. I’ve worked so hard to get to this point in my life. My dad, sister, and brother have been my support system after Mom passed away two years ago.

I couldn’t be more excited that my best friend, Laney, is going to Indiana with me. Her family life is a lot different from mine, but her aunt makes sure she has everything she needs. She is one smart bitch and received a full ride to Indiana on an academic scholarship.

My father owns an investment firm in Denver, so he has the money to make sure we have everything we need in Indiana. A week before we move, he is having my car transported to the house he bought for us off-campus because he didn’t want to have to worry about us living on campus.

The summer has passed by in a whirlwind of emotions and anxieties because it’s time to leave everything I know behind. Feelings I’ve never felt before lie in my stomach, but I know everything will be awesome when we get to Indiana University and settle into our new place.

The day is beautiful. The sun is shining and I can’t wait to get out of the city and smell the fresh mountain air. I’m sure that will help with my anxiousness. Two of Daddy’s men are picking me up from our penthouse to take Laney and me to the airport. While I’m getting all of my bags ready, one of the guys buzzes the intercom to let me know they are here.

As I head down to the car with my luggage in tow, I discover that one of the guys is holding the car door open for me. I climb in. The driver stays in the car while the other guy gets my luggage, which I left beside the car.

I can’t tell who the driver is today, but I think he is new and very cute. I glance in the rearview mirror to see if I can catch a glimpse of his eyes and freeze when my eyes lock onto a set of sexy blue eyes. His eyes are the kind that can probably see into your soul. I quickly glance away from him, shivering, and remind the guy who put my luggage in the car and introduced himself as Sam Johnson to pick up Laney on the way.

When we get out of the downtown traffic, the drive to Laney’s house should be quick, I hope. The air in the car seems a little stuffy and thick. Maybe it’s me? Mr. Broody Driver keeps watching me in the rearview. I try not to look up, but I can feel him peering at me.
Can this drive take any longer?

Twenty minutes later, we finally arrive at Laney’s, and I don’t wait for whatever his name is to open my door. Laney is waiting for me by the door when I get to her. Within minutes, her bags and suitcases are in the trunk of the car, she is with me in the backseat, and we are on our way to start the next part of our lives. I glance at the rearview mirror and Mr. Broody is brooding even more, so I look away to talk to Laney.

“Can you believe it? We’re on our way away from this place!”

“Bitch, you have a loud mouth. Yes, it’s about time we got out of here. I swear, if my aunt told me to use her herbal remedies one more time, I was going to scream. The only herb I plan on using is the one in a joint.” She smirks.

“Shhh. I don’t need the guys telling my dad you smoke pot.” I giggle.

“One of us has to since you have to get your pee tested all the time since you play softball.” She sticks her tongue out at me. “New guys?” she asks, motioning to the guys sitting up front.

“The driver has been with my dad for a few months, I think,” I whisper. “I can’t remember his name, but he’s cute and his eyes are amazing. I totally could hit that. The guy in the passenger seat started a few weeks ago. He’s cute too, but not as much as the driver.”

“Whore! Oh, girl, I have to disagree. I would totally get it on with the passenger,” she whisper-yells, and we both start laughing.

We talk about what we are going to do once we get to Indianapolis. Indiana University Bloomington is over an hour away from where our flight is arriving. We are renting a car to take us the rest of the way. My father offered to rent a limo for us, but I thought that was too much.

Laney wants to go to our house and unpack the boxes, so I save my plan to explore Indianapolis for another day. My father had the house furnished for us and shipped everything from Denver to Bloomington, including our cars. In addition to all of that, the house will be mine when I graduate. I can sell it or keep it as an investment property. I can’t wait to get my high school graduation present, a red Volvo, back. I love it.

One of the men clears his throat, pulling Laney and me out of our conversation. I notice my door is open.

“Ms. McCoy, Ms. Spears, we are at the airport. Are you ready to go?” Mr. Broody asks.

Whoa, his voice is as sexy as he is
.

“Yes. Can you carry our bags to check-in, please?” I ask him.

“Yes, ma’am. Johnson and I will follow you when you’re ready.”

After they pick up our luggage, the guys follow us to the check-in. Mr. Broody is carrying one of the bags I want to take on the plane with me.

“I need that bag.” I point to my red and white flower overnight bag, which is in Mr. Broody’s right hand.

“Here you are, ma’am.” He hands the bag to me, smiling, and our fingers brush.

I hold onto his fingers longer than I should, and he stands there. Feeling an intense pull toward this guy, I start to lean into him, but Laney grabs my other hand and tugs me through check-in and to the concourse. When I look back, he’s still standing there, staring at me.

Aedan

Denver. I can’t believe I’m back here, home, working for an extremely rich man and his very successful company. Thinking I was going to be stuck in Indiana for a while until I saved enough money to move back, I was glad when this opportunity became available. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for Indiana because I received a full-ride scholarship to play basketball at Indiana University, but I didn’t think everything through about how I was supposed get back home.

I was on the starting line-up for three years, and the following season, a knee injury ended my basketball career. My parents worked hard—my mom is a pastry chef and my father is a high school English teacher—but I didn’t want to strap them down with the burden of paying for the rest of my college education and then moving me home. My sister spent enough of Mom and Dad’s money on college for the both of us. Luckily, I was able to stay my senior year. Because of my academics, they offered me a scholarship, and I graduated a semester early, majoring in criminal justice, since I took summer courses.

When Pearse McCoy interviewed me shortly after I graduated, I didn’t know the exact position I was applying for. The ad online was vague, but the interview went well and he hired me that day. He said he vetted me out and he liked the familiar names of my references and what they had to say about me. He informed me I would be part of his security team and that the position would require some training.

I don’t really want to do security, but the position looked promising. With him paying for the training, I won’t complain. I enrolled into the Public Administration master’s program at Colorado University after Mr. McCoy hired me so I can have more options if this position doesn’t work out. I start the program this fall.

Right now, I’m on driving duty for Mr. McCoy. Sam Johnson has less seniority than I do at McCoy Investments, so I make him do all the heavy lifting. I heard rumors that Pearse McCoy’s oldest daughter, Jesse, was hot, but I had no idea until she came sauntering out of the penthouse lobby. As I watch her get into the back of the car, I start thinking about all the things I could do to her beautiful body…

Damn, get a hold of yourself. This is your boss’s daughter you’re thinking about sexually. Plus, you’re twenty-two and she’s eighteen
.

Still, I can’t help but look at her. When I glance back up at the rearview mirror, I meet the most beautiful sparkling green eyes. I could get lost in them.

I look away from her and adjust the temperature in the car. The inside of the car feels like the Sahara, and it’s not even extremely hot outside. I hope the drive to Ms. Spears’s place won’t take too long. I’m ready to get out of this car and stretch my legs…along with some other things.

When we arrive at Ms. Spears’s house, Ms. McCoy bolts from the car.

What the hell? Doesn’t she know that it’s protocol for either Johnson or myself to open the door for her?

I want to say something to her, but there is no need to start shit. Johnson exits the car and gets Ms. Spears and her belongings situated in the back of the car.

Let’s get this damn show on the road already
.

Getting to the airport was a breeze, and I clear my throat, hoping to pull Jesse out of the conversation she is having with Ms. Spears.

“Ms. McCoy, Ms. Spears, we are at the airport. Are you ready to go?” I ask.

“Yes. Can you carry our bags to check-in, please?” she asks almost seductively.

“Yes, ma’am. Johnson and I will follow you when you’re ready.”

We grab their luggage and follow them to the check-in.

“I need that bag.” Jesse points to the bag in my right hand.

“Here you are, ma’am.”

I hand it over to her and our fingers connect. I don’t want to let go of this bag. The smell of her perfume, apples and honeysuckle, tickles my nose. I wonder why I didn’t smell it in the car. I lean in to inhale more of her scent, but Ms. Spears grabs Jesse’s other hand and pulls her away. She looks back and our eyes meet.

There is something about this girl that makes me want to get to know her, but it seems like now isn’t the right time. Maybe one day.
