Chapter 24

~ Lain ~

They met up in the chapel, Lain slamming the door behind him. “Is it true?” he demanded, rounding the corner, coming face-to-face with Brock. “Are we selling guns to the
Chupacabras
so they can fucking sell little girls to the highest bidder?!”

Brock’s eyes flicked away and back again, and then he shrugged nonchalantly. “Who cares?” he asked dismissively. “We’re not the cops of the world. If they’re doing shit they ain’t supposed to be, they’ll get caught. Not our business. We just sell ‘em the guns.”

“You’re fucking with me right now!” Lain yelled. He felt his face grow red with anger and he balled his fists by his side. What he wouldn’t give for one solid punch in Brock’s smirking face. “How can this
not
be our business? When the
Chupas
get caught and get questioned by the cops, the first thing they’ll do is finger us in return for a plea deal. You motherfucking goddamn son-of-a-bitch, the
Chupas
aren’t going to nicely take the fall and swing in the wind, protecting our asses. They’re gonna tie a noose around our necks themselves!”

“What the fuck have
you
been doing behind our backs?” Brock shot back. “You had one job yesterday. One single, stupidly easy job - get a blonde bitch on a plane. And yet, you failed. Dan told me this morning that she wasn’t there, and that in fact, she’d asked to stay until Wednesday!”

Lain glanced down for a moment and he felt his cheeks color a brighter red. He’d hid information from his president, and as much as he was beginning to doubt that Brock should hold that title, he couldn’t single-handedly depose the man. Until the club voted, Brock was the man in charge.

And Lain had lied, by omission, to him, to protect a chick.

So Lain pulled a Brock - he switched topics when he didn’t like where the current one was going.

“I think,” he said quietly, deadly, staring into Brock’s eyes, unblinking, “that a part of me has wanted to stay innocent. A part of me didn’t want to know the truth of what you were getting us into. I didn’t ask questions and I didn’t push back when you proposed this
Chupacabra
deal. But that ends here and now. I will not stand idly by while you drag our club into this fucking mess.”

Brock gave a sharp laugh of disbelief. “Really? You think that
now
that you’ve grown a pair of balls, we’re all gonna roll over and play dead? Well fuck a lotta that. This deal with the
Chupas
goes down tonight, and you’re going to get rid of her. If we don’t follow through with our agreement with the
Chupas,
we’re as good as dead. You don’t fuck around with them.

“Ella has to die, and you’re gonna kill her. This is how you’re going to prove your loyalty to your MC. This is how you’re going to show the world that you know where your priorities lie. You’re gonna kill her, and you’re gonna make it look like an accident.”

Looking into Brock’s ice-cold eyes, Lain knew whatever good had been in Brock when they were kids, was gone now. The power, the money - it’d all gone to Brock’s head. He was no longer Lain’s childhood friend.

Brock had to die.

And Lain had to be the one who killed him.

“Fine,” Lain said softly. “I’ll take her out on a bike ride out into the desert, and I’ll kill her out there. By time the authorities find her body, the bones will be picked so clean, no one will have a fucking clue what happened to her. It won’t be traced back to the Devils.”

“Good,” Brock said approvingly. “I knew you’d see reason.”

Lain walked out. The next time Lain saw Brock, one of them was going to die.

“Rush,” Lain said out in his truck, the doors closed, the windows rolled up. Even so, he kept his voice low. “We have to pull the trigger. We have to get rid of Brock. He’s gone off the deep end. I’ll tell you more about it later, but right now, I need you to call the other guys. Everyone needs to meet at the Cactus Motel. I’ll fill everyone in at the same time.”

“Got it,” Rush said. “The guys have all been out searching for Ella. Did you find her?”

“Yeah. It’s…a long story. Tell ‘em to all head to the motel.”

“Yes sir,” Rush said, and hung up.

Lain pulled out of the parking lot and headed towards his house. He needed to drop his truck off there and hide his Harley out of sight. Brock had to believe that his veep was obediently following orders, until Lain could figure out what to do.

~ Brock ~

“He’s gone off the deep end,” Brock said, no emotion in his voice. “He has to die, and it has to happen before the
Chupa
deal goes down tonight.”

Chili nodded his head once, no questions in his eyes. For a moment, Brock wondered what it would have been like if he’d been able to choose his own VP instead of having Lain foisted upon him. With a “yes man” like Chili at his side, he could’ve taken over the gun market of the entire southwest.

Luckily, with Lain almost out of the picture, this was going to be an option again. He shoulda done this a long time ago.

“Lain headed west once he left here. He’s not stupid enough to spend a lot of time at home right now because he knows how easy it would be to find him there. So start driving around and checking all of the local motels. Ella was staying at the El Rancho motel - start there first. We need to take him out before he can take us out. He’s gone rogue - we have no choice.

“Take Dumbo’s new SUV. He just bought it yesterday so Lain won’t recognize it. Once you find him, call me and then stay there. We’ll make a plan at that point.”

“Yes, sir,” Chili said, and headed to the door, no hesitation at all.

Just the yes man I’ve always needed.

He picked up the phone and stared down at it. He needed to call members he knew he could trust. Flicking through his contacts, he came to Dumbo. Perfect. The guy was too stupid to be disloyal. He hit the call button. When Dumbo answered, Brock didn’t bother with a greeting.

“Dumbo, listen,” he said, urgently. “Lain has gone rogue. He’s trying to take down the club. We have to take him down first. Chili’s gonna stop by in a moment and borrow your new SUV because I know Lain won’t recognize it. Once Chili finds him, we’re going to take him out. The
Chupa
deal is at midnight - we can’t let Lain fuck this up for us.”

“He already came and got it, boss,” Dumbo said. “He told me it was urgent so I just tossed him the keys and he took off.”

“Perfect,” Brock said but as he hung up with Dumbo, his phone rang. It was Chili.

Fuck, that was fast.

“I found him,” Chili said. “He’s at the Cactus Motel - I just saw him walk into a motel room. Boss, a bunch of the MC is already here. If he’s gone rogue, then so has half the Blue Devils.”

“Fuck!” Brock yelled and slammed his hand down onto the stainless steel table. The sound echoed through the chapel. “Give me names. I need to know who our enemies are.”

After Chili rattled off ten names, Brock hung up and called the next trusted member. This was going to turn into a shootout, instead of Brock just being able to use a silencer on Lain and walking away. Goddamn it.

Yeah, he needed every last goddamn loyal Blue Devil he could get. It was time to take this motherfucking Benedict down.

Chapter 25

~ Lain ~

“Lain.” The voice on the phone was too quiet in the ruckus atmosphere of the motel room. Lain walked into the other one through the adjoining door and shut the door behind him. He saw Ella peek into the room from the bathroom, saw it was him, waved, and went back into the bathroom. He smiled to himself. It was going to take a long fucking time for him to get used to her short spiky hair but whatever. Having her here in black hair was better than losing her forever.

“Sorry,” Lain said, plugging his other ear to try to further drown out the members next door. “It’s a little loud in here. Who did you say this was?”

“Dumbo,” he said, a little louder this time.

“Hey Dumbo,” Lain said, unsure of where this was going. Dumbo had always been one who was completely loyal to Brock. Why, when everything seemed to be going to shit, was Dumbo calling him?

“Brock is gonna kill you,” Dumbo said urgently. “He’s calling all of the members together and he’s going to take you down. He sent Chili over to get my new SUV. Just bought it yesterday. You need to watch out for a light gray Escalade.”

Escalade? Why the fuck was Brock having Chili drive around in a fucking Escalade?? Surely Brock would realize a vehicle like that would draw attention.

Lain walked over and flicked his fingers through the mini blinds in the window and sure enough, there was the Escalade, parked across the street, open as could be. Chili was even worse at surveillance than Brock was.

“He’s here,” Lain said grimly. “Watching us from across the street. Thanks, man. I appreciate the heads up.”

He hung up with Dumbo. It was time to set a trap for Brock & Co.

Ella came out of the shower, a towel wrapped around her head, another towel wrapped around her body. Lain swallowed, hard. Looking at her was like the best porn ever, ‘cause he could fuck her when he was done drooling over her.

I have to keep my mind on the mission. I can’t allow myself to be distracted by
…he glanced down her body…
curves that would drive a priest insane.

“Hey baby, you need to get dressed and come over to the other room when you’re ready. We gotta hurry - I think Brock is going to move quick on this.”

He walked through to the other side before he could be tortured further by watching her towel drop to the floor, and closed the door firmly behind him. If he didn’t get to watch Ella get dressed, neither did his men.

“Listen up!” he hollered, and gave a sharp whistle through his front teeth. The room instantly quieted, the febrile atmosphere dissipating instantly. Lain started with the most important thing: His reason for rebelling against Brock. He quickly gave a rundown of what Ella had pieced together. A ripple went through the men when they heard about the little girls being kidnapped. They may be hardcore bikers, but they weren’t perverts.

Brock couldn’t tell the difference, and that was going to be his downfall.

“The other club members are going to see this as us going AWOL,” Lain said, “but we can’t risk these decisions anymore. If we let it continue, Brock is going to bring this club down. We’re all going to end up behind bars, and a bunch of little girls are going to end up as sex slaves for the rest of their lives. We can’t let that happen. A lot of you guys have been telling me for a while that I never shoulda let Brock take the position of President, and you’re probably right. I just didn’t want to split our club down the middle and I thought I could keep Brock in line.

“Turns out, I can’t.”

He walked over to the front window and pointed out, even though the blinds had been drawn for privacy. “We’ve got ourselves a tail across the street. Chili is there, watching us. I know that just this morning, Chili was our brother. And I know it’s hard to face the idea that we’re going to have to take him out. I don’t want to, and if we play our cards right, we won’t have to. But every one of us has to understand that we’re taking up arms against our brothers. It’s time to take a vote. I’m putting it on the table right now.

“Yay or nay - we take out Brock and any other brother we need to take out, and we re-establish the Blue Devils as a legit club. No more running guns. No more drugs.” He flicked his eyes around the room. “Roll call vote.”

He was happily surprised when every last one of them voted “Yay.” It was one thing to support something in theory; it was something fucking else to lay your life on the line to make it happen.

“Okay then, we’re a go. Little John, I need you to go through the back window in the bathroom. Chili is watching out front. He won’t see you leave. I need you to go to my apartment,” he fished his keys out of his pocket and tossed them to Little, “and get my truck. I need you to get the ammo and guns in the gun safe, and the bulletproof vests in the closet, and bring it all back here. Oh, and,” he paused for a second and glanced around the room until his eyes fell on Ella, who’d finished dressing and joined them, “the sex doll.”

Loud laughter erupted in the room, as Ella’s eyebrows shot up. Lain gave her a sheepish grin. Talking over the laughter, he said to Little, “It’s on the top shelf in my bedroom closet, left-hand side. She’s, uh, currently deflated.” The laughter, which had begun to quiet, filled the room again. Ella had her arms crossed across her chest, and a look that
clearly
said, “I can’t wait to hear it, buster” all over her face.

“Come back and park in the back and pass the shit through the bathroom window. Got it?”

“Yup,” Little John said, and walked into the bathroom. Two of the MCers helped shove him through the tiny bathroom window. For what was probably the first time in Little’s life, being the smallest guy in the room was a positive.

“All right, while he’s rounding up our supplies, we need to discuss strategy.” The men gathered round.
