I stared at her, in utter disbelief. “How is
that possible? You're so young...so beautiful!”

“Thank you.” Jessie said, without blushing.
She obviously knew how she looked. But sixty? And today?

“Your birthday is today, like mine?” I
asked.

“All of our birthdays fall on April 1st.
April Fool's Day. It's kind of an inside joke. The most advanced
humans on the planet...intellectually, athletically,
creatively...were all born on April 1st. Our father had a sense of
humor.” She giggled.

“You said 'all' of our birthdays are
tomorrow. There's more of us? C'mon Jessie, you're holding out on
me.” I exclaimed.

“Okay. You, me , and others, are...very, very
special. We were born out of a genetic experiment which began a
long time ago. The government, and not just our government, but all
over the world...all the governments, began experimenting with
genetic engineering. The original idea was to make perfect soldiers
and spies...Super Spies. Stronger, faster, and smarter than any of
our enemies. One man could kill hundreds, maybe even thousands. A
superior human who could win wars single-handedly. The experiment
had successes, and failures. But as technology advanced, so did the
success of the experiments. One man, our father, if you want to
call him that, changed everything. Dr. Jonathan Steel. He was
brilliant...an absolute genius in genetics and DNA research. He
made you...us...what we are today. And he worked for the United
States.”

I was shocked. I was from some kind of
experiment? A Super Soldier? Jessie and I came from the same
genetics? My fucking head was spinning.

“I know this is a lot to take in.” Jessie
said, her hand going to my knee, consoling. “Samantha, I was
assigned to watch over you until you were ready.”

“Ready for what?” I asked, kind of suspecting
where the conversation was heading. It resembled something from one
of the spy novels I had read in the library.

Jessie just looked in to my eyes. She knew
that I had answered my own question. I was being readied for the
next chapter in my life...a soldier...a spy.

A Super Soldier. A Super Spy.

I felt as though I was going to be sick.

Jessie watched my reactions, concern on her
face. The concern of a loving parent? The concern of a concerned
sister?

The concern of a government agent, fulfilling
her duties?

My stomach started to lurch. I began to get a
hot, almost painful feeling around my crotch. My lower abdominal
region started to ache. I put my hand to my gut, the pain worsening
with each passing second. I never felt like this before in my life.
I never even had a cold, let alone any kind of pain.

“What is it?” asked Jessie. “Are you
okay?”

“It feels like my guts are on fire.” I
exclaimed. I broke out in a cold sweat, my body going from hot to
cold, then back to hot. Jessie put a hand on my forehead, feeling
the heat.

“Shit, Sam...you're burning up. Maybe it's a
panic attack...the stress of finding out about who you really are.”
I heard the concern in Jessie's voice...but I heard something else
as well. I think she knew what was wrong with me.

The pain in my lower abdomen was searing
now...I felt like I had to shit and pee fire. I jumped off the
chair, and ran to the bathroom, Jessie on my tail. I tried to close
the door behind me, but Jesse wouldn't have it...she stood in the
bathroom doorway, as I ripped my pajama bottoms down to my ankles,
and sank down on to the toilet bowl. The seat was cool on my ass
cheeks, but only for a few seconds...I was on fire!

I muffled a scream, as I tried to relax both
my rectal and urethra muscles. Whatever was in me...wanted out. I
took a deep breath, and then exhaled, while pushing out my
abdominal muscles. A stream was released from my vagina...but not
urine.

I hunched forward, and watched as ruby red
liquid cascaded into the toilet water...turning the water to
blood.

My period had come.

I looked up to see Jessie standing in the
doorway, a look of triumph on her face. I didn't know why my period
had been so important to them, but when this was over, I was gonna
find out.

“There are pads in the basket next to you,
Sam.” said Jessie smugly. The consoling, loving person wasn't
standing at the door anymore. The government agent was. The
soldier.

***

I was back in the living room, laying on the
couch. Jessie was in the kitchen, talking on the phone. I didn't
pick up on anything she was saying. Did it really matter? My fate
was sealed. A part of me was confused; scared. But another part was
glad. As soon as I had seen the blood pouring out from me, I knew
more answers to this mystery were coming. I was looking forward to
those answers.

The front door burst open, Tom exploding
through it. He saw me lying on the couch, and he approached me. “So
it finally came,” he said snidely. “We've waited a long time. I'm
amazed it took this long.” He wore a big, ugly grin of
satisfaction.

Jessie joined us in the living room. “They're
on their way, Tom.”

Tom nodded in compliance.

“I opened her eyes to some of the truth. I
think she began to menstruate from the stress.”

“Go fuck yourselves!” I yelled at them.

“Hey!” Tom yelled back. “Don't be mad at us.
We took good care of you, all these years...especially Jessie. I
don't think you know what we endured over the last seven years. It
was like taking a Viagra, and the effects never wearing off. But
you wouldn't understand that yet, would you?”

I looked into Tom's eyes, a sneer on my lips.
“So you're complaining about all the hot sex you've been
having...walking around this place with a hard-on twenty four,
seven. Poor little Tommy. Give me a little credit, asshole...Jessie
told me how intelligent I was. I would think you knew that. Of
course I know what a sexual stimulant is.”

Tom was taken aback by my response. “Jessie,
just how much did you tell our little “Wonder-girl” anyway?” he
asked.

“Probably not enough. She deserves to know
everything, Tom. So do you.” Jessie said curtly.

“What, I'm not in the loop? Is that what
you're saying.” said Tom defensively.

“No...not about everything. I'm sure there
are things I don't know,” said Jessie. “Why would they tell us?
It's always been a need to know basis, hasn't it? When you were
with the CIA, did they tell you everything you needed to know about
an assignment or mission.”

Tom just smirked at her, understanding her
point completely. “Well they could've told us ahead of time about
the damn pheromones. It's one thing to crave sex...it's another to
have your mind completely fogged by it. And you know exactly what I
mean, Jess.”

“I agree. But I don't think they knew what
they were dealing with. The notes and papers left behind by Steel
were theory. Even he wasn't sure how this was going to end up. He
hypothesized almost everything.” said Jessie. “He was a genius, but
this was truly new tech. She could be the greatest human on the
planet...or dead.

I decided to jump in, hearing the name Steel.
“You're talking as if I'm not here. Who said I have to be a 'Super
Soldier', or spy, or whatever I'm supposed to be? What if I don't
want to be anything like you two?” I sniffled, a tear coming to my
eye. I was acting, hoping to get some information.

“You're nothing like us, Samantha,” Tom said
quickly. “We're normal.

I looked at Jessie, then at Tom. Did Jessie
lie to me?

Tom straightened up, now looking Jessie up
and down. “What's she talking about, Jess?” he asked.

“She needed to know the truth. She still
does.” Jesse said.

“You're one of them! How did I not see it?”
said Tom, upset with himself.

I realized that Tom was left in the dark.
Jessie had been the one running this assignment from the beginning.
I laughed. I suddenly felt something I hadn't expected. I felt
superior.

“I guess you were here to relieve Jessie of
her pent up sexual frustration...not the other way around.” I said,
giggling.

Tom's ego had been smashed.

“Sorry Tom,” said Jessie. “General Gibbons
thought it was best that a real GESS Agent was watching over
Samantha.”

“GESS?” I asked. “What's GESS?”

“That's who we work for, Sam,” said Jessie.
“It's like the CIA, the FBI, the NSA. G.E.S.S. It stands for
Genetically Engineered Super Soldier.”

“Yeah,” sneered Tom, “except in your case,
it's going to be Genetically Engineered Sex Soldier.” He laughed
lightly, looking at me with contempt.

“What's that supposed to mean?” I asked. I
leered at Tom. It was obvious we didn't like one another. I still
hoped there was more to Jessie than her thinking this was just an
assignment. I looked at her, hoping for more answers.

Jesse sat down next to me on the couch. “Look
Sam, there's a lot more to this story then I've told you. It's very
complicated. I've already told you more than I was allowed to. I'm
sorry.”

“Why don't you tell me everything. I can
handle it. I'm not a kid. Tell me for my birthday.” I said, hoping
to play up to her sympathetic side. “I may be special, but I'm
still a person.”

“I'm not sure what you can handle, Sam. I'm
sure if the General thought it was okay, he would have said so.”
said Jessie. “I mean...look what happened before. I told you some
of the truth about yourself, and the stress caused you to
menstruate...your body has built-in defense mechanisms. I should
know, because we're so much alike.”

Jessie looked to Tom for support, but he took
a few steps back, and leaned against the wall, a look of disgust on
his face. “Thanks for backing me up, Tom.” Jessie said to him
sarcastically.

“Well, if you can't tell me what you know
about me...tell me more about yourself. You can do that, can't
you?” I asked innocently.

“Yes, Jessie,” Tom broke in, a cynical tone
in his voice. “tell us a bit about yourself. Hmm.”

Jessie threw him a dirty look. She checked
her watch, and paused.

She spoke quickly then, realizing she didn't
have much time.

“When I was twenty five years old, I was
diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. No cure, no hope. My mother
found out about a special clinical experiment...it was very
hush-hush, you know. It wasn't being given by a drug company, it
was being given by Jonathan Steel. He was the only person
authorized by the government to use human subjects in his
experiments. I thought the experiment was for cancer, like a cancer
drug. I was very sick, and becoming sicker by the day, so I agreed
to it.

“There were a few other subjects, mostly men.
It consisted of two injections...one in to the spine, the other
directly into the brain. I know that quite a few subjects died.
Obviously I didn't. It completely cured me, and I was forever
grateful to Dr. Steel. But I later found out, it didn't just cure
me. There were side effects. Well, now that I think of it, the
procedure worked perfectly, and the cancer going in to remission
was the side effect.”

“I knew I was different within a few days. I
wasn't just cured, and feeling better. I was stronger, more agile
than ever before. I was definitely more intelligent...more
self-aware. I was enhanced.”

I was watching Jessie closely as she
explained the reason for her enhancement. She was quite proud.

“So how did you end up working for the
government?” I asked.

“That will be enough Agent Rand!” came a loud
voice of authority.

The three of us turned to see a number of men
entering the house, all in suits, sunglasses...little devices in
their ears. In the middle of them was a tall, well built man in a
tailored suit...a dark green silk, fitting his form perfectly. He
looked directly at me, and smirked. He had steel gray eyes, a
chiseled face and chin...perfect features. His hair was cut short,
almost military, with the temples a very light gray. I thought he
was the most handsome man I had ever seen.

“Agent Rand, I think you've told our Miss
Steel all she needs to know for now about who we are.”

Jessie quickly stood up, giving our new
visitor the utmost respect. “Yes, sir!” she replied.

The stranger took in Tom, who also was silent
and stiff. He walked over to him, shook his hand, and thanked him
for a job well done. “Agent Trevor, I know this was a long,
stressful assignment. You and Agent Rand should be proud of
yourselves.”

“Thank you, sir.” answered Agent Tom
Trevor.

The handsome stranger now approached me,
sitting on the couch. I took in his stature. He filled the room
with a powerful presence that couldn't be ignored. He took my
hand...not shaking it, but holding it.

“Samantha Steel, my name is General Hank
Gibbons. I run a very private division of the government known as
the GESS Agency. I'm very happy to see that you're well. You have
no need to fear me...we're both on the same side. In fact, you and
I are made from the same mold.”

I quickly looked at Jessie, who nodded at me.
Then I went back to looking at him...staring at him. It seemed that
General Gibbons didn't just run the GESS Agency...he was one of
them. Us.

I became aware that I was staring at the
General the way people stare at me...in awe.

I was also aware of how incredibly attracted
I was to him.

Nine

We were sitting in the back of a black
limousine, speeding along Highway 50.

Fifteen minutes ago, I was packing some
essentials into a suitcase, carefully being watched by an agent of
GESS. He wasn't one of us superhumans, or whatever you wanted to
call us. Just a regular agent, with a really big gun bulging from a
chest holster. I packed quickly...not wanting to upset General
Gibbons. Or the guy with the gun.
