“I understand why he didn’t shoot,” Derek said quietly. “And I know what he’s going through.”
“You do? Were you ever in a situation like that?”
He flipped the eggs and then slid her a glance. Finally he smiled, a tender, somewhat sad smile. “Nothing I’m going to tell you about. I talked to Rashid before he flew back to Islamabad. He knows to watch his back. She won’t let it go now that she knows that he knows who she is.”
“Well, he knows who to call on.” Her voice held a note of pride. Derek shot her a grin. “You know you’d be the first to go if he needed help. And so would I.”
“Thia, you have a real knack for adventure.” He stared at her, his expression serious. “But you’re not going to get involved in anything that dangerous. Ever again. You hear?” He emphasized each word with a flick of the spatula. “I don’t think my heart can take it.”
She nibbled on a piece of bacon and smiled. “Why, Derek,
darlin’
, I wouldn’t dream of it.”
