Ethan nodded in appreciation.
“I’m still worried about what got recorded in that garage.
What if the cops find it?”
“If Traxler actually got us on tape no one has found it yet,” said Ged.
“I went to see him in jail, tried to get him to tell me where it might be, but he sat there with that empty grin on his face.
I can’t shake the feeling it’s going to come back to bite us.”
Ethan nodded, “Even if there aren’t any recordings, Alexander can’t be happy with us.
It’s just a matter of time before we hear from him, especially now that we know he’s connected to the Dixie Mafia.”
“We’ll be ready, son,” said Zeke.
“We always are.
For now, let’s talk about you and the future of this family.”
They lay in the bed hotel room bed naked, the blinds drawn tight.
They had been holed up there for days.
They had thought that they wanted to get as far away from everything as they could, but they didn’t even leave Kentucky.
They drove to Asheville and got a room in the nicest hotel they could find, ordered room service, and made love constantly.
During one of their breaks to rehydrate, she curled up next to him and said, “Can I ask something of you?”
“Shoot.”
“Always be honest with me, OK?
Even if you think you’re doing me a favor by lying or holding something back.”
“Sure,” he said.
“What brought that up?”
“In the shower I was thinking that I wasn’t honest with Nick.
In the beginning I tried to be the person he wanted, but I wasn’t honest with him and it ended the way it did.
He wasn’t a bad guy, we just weren’t right for each other.”
“And you think we are?”
She shoved a pillow in his face.
“A Dalton and a Prescott.
No one in Remington’s going to believe it, but yeah I think we’re right for each other.”
“Me too.”
“And you’re happy with the decision we made?”
She was talking about their future plans.
They wanted to leave Remington, leave everything behind them and drive off somewhere no one knew them so they could have a fresh start, but the more they talked about it, the more it became clear that neither of them wanted to go.
Julie found she wanted to repair the relationship with her family, especially with her sister, and yes, even with her father.
She wanted to deal with them on her own terms, living her life the best way she knew, but she did want them to be a part of that life.
And she wanted to keep working.
She’d been through so much and found out she was strong enough to handle anything that came along.
Ethan, as it turns out, actually wanted to stick around for the family business.
He’d been born into bootlegging, but now he wanted to build something, be a part of something with a goal to work towards.
He would be a founding member of something that could last for generations and, surprisingly, he liked the thought of it.
He’d gladly handed over his share of the final bootlegging run, minus seven hundred dollars.
That money belonged to them and they promised themselves and their families they would go until the money ran out, then they’d be back.
“Yeah, I’m happy with the decision.
We make good choices together.
Better choices than we ever made apart.”
Julie laid her head on his chest and ran her hand lightly over his bruised ribs then up to his shoulder.
She loved the feel of his skin on hers.
Since coming to the hotel she was calmer and more at ease than she’d ever been.
She knew they couldn’t stay there forever, and that soon they would be back to the troubles of the world, but she felt that all of it was manageable as long as they were together.
“Just you and me,” she said.
“What’s that?”
“I was thinking, things don’t seem so impossible when we’re together.”
He smiled and kissed her.
“You and me versus the world, babe.”
