Again,
he simply nodded.
»You
would do that?«
Calum
had stopped walking and was staring out at the sea. The surface of the water
looked like a mirror, motionless in the evening sun. I didn’t want to push him.
I already knew his answer, but I couldn’t help but hope.
»I
asked Ares to set the meeting for tonight,« he answered in a raw voice.
I
looked at him in confusion.
»It’s
a full moon. I’ll be able to come back to you if I go tonight.«
He
had done that for me?
»Emma,
do you know how much I love you? I can’t bear the thought of having to part
from you forever.«
I
realized then that he had fallen for me just as deeply as I for him. He didn’t
want to leave me. So I could only hope that they would let him come back again.
I pulled him down onto the grass and gave in to his caresses. The big yellow
moon was slowly appearing in the sky, meaning that he would have to go soon.
After
being oblivious to the world for a while, we heard voices. I looked up and saw
Bree, Ethan, Peter, Dr. Erickson, and Sophie walking down the path. We sat up
and plucked stray blades of grass out of one another’s hair. I giggled,
snuggling up to Calum as he put his arm around me. All at once, a cold wind
started up. I looked up to the sky and saw a huge dark cloud move across the
moon. Waves began to build up on the horizon.
»Calum,
let’s go back to the house,« I asked. »It looks like there’s a storm coming and
it’s making me feel uneasy.«
But
he didn’t move. He was staring out at the raging sea in horror. Following his
gaze, I saw the waves join together to form one immense wave, towering higher
and higher as it moved towards us.
»What’s
happening?« I whispered, struggling to control the panic rising within me.
But
Calum still didn’t answer. I shook his arm.
His
face was like stone. I looked back out at the sea. The wave was now as high as
a tower, swaying back and forth on the spot. This definitely wasn’t normal.
Peter
screamed something at us, but the crashing of the water drowned out his voice.
Suddenly,
Elin appeared at the top of the wave. I jumped in fright. More and more
shellycoats began to appear by his side. It looked like they were standing on
the crest of the wave, and they were armed with tridents, brandishing the
three-pronged spears angrily. What were they planning to do? Elin screamed
something at us that I couldn’t make out, but Calum clearly knew what he was
saying. He closed his eyes and took a few steps closer to the shore. Until now
I had assumed that their telepathic connection only worked underwater, but it
seemed I had been wrong. Peter suddenly appeared next to me and held on to me
tightly. »He’s trying to talk sense into Elin,« he whispered into my ear.
»I
can’t imagine he’ll have much success.« I shook Peter’s hand away and went to
stand by Calum’s side. »Let’s go, it’s too dangerous.«
Calum
looked at me with regret. »We can’t run away from this, Emma.«
Peter
shouted and pointed out at the sea. The shellycoats were still there on the
crest of the wave, roaring with anger. But now another mighty wave rose up,
with Ares on the very top. He was alone and his magnificent form was
breathtaking. Around half of Elin’s followers disappeared at the sight of him.
But Elin himself didn’t seem affected by his father’s appearance. Ares called
something out to him in a thunderous tone, at which Elin burst into mocking
laughter. At that moment, he lifted his trident and hurled it at Ares with all
his might. I screamed and we looked on helplessly as the trident shot into
Ares’ chest. He turned around on his own axis and pulled it out, then sank down
into the roaring sea.
Elin’s
wild laughter at his victory echoed over to us on the cliffs. Then he raised
both arms and the sea fell silent. The silence that spread out around us
thundered in my ears more than the previous crash of the waves. I looked at the
spot where Ares had disappeared and a dry sob escaped me. But Elin didn’t give
us time to think.
»Calum,«
he cried out. »Come back to your people and face our judgment.«
Calum
stepped closer to the cliff and called back. »I will never submit to your
judgment. I will accept only the Council’s.«
»We’ll
choose a new Council to decide what’s right or wrong. And you will submit to
the judgment. It’s your duty.«
»Elin,
you have to come to your senses,« cried Calum. But the words just deflected off
him.
»It’s
either you or her,« he hissed. He was quieter now, but everyone could
understand his words, loud and clear. »Face up to your judgment or I’ll destroy
them all.«
I
jumped in shock.
»You
can’t just make yourself leader.« Calum’s voice still sounded firm.
»I
can and I will. It’s high time that something changed. That’s what you yourself
always said, and my patience has run out.«
At
that moment, the wave began to rush towards the coast with an unbelievable
force. The monstrous tower of water towered above us, growing taller and
taller. We were rooted to the spot, and Calum’s skin felt ice cold to the
touch. It would only be mere seconds before the wave reached us, killing us as
well as destroying every one of the surrounding houses and those who lived in
them.
Calum
turned and looked me in the eye. His decision was made.
»Emma,
you have to be sensible, you can’t follow me, do you hear me?« He shook me
softly by the arms. »You have to look after yourself, for my sake. I couldn’t
bear it if something happened to you.«
He
pulled me towards him.
»I
will love you for all eternity,« he whispered into my ear. The burning gaze in
his eyes was even more insistent than his voice. »You have to forget me, Emma,
and try to live a normal life, do you hear me?«
»I
can’t,« I breathed, so softly that I was sure he hadn’t heard me.
His
lips touched mine. Then, as he let go and rushed off, the world around me fell
apart.
I
watched him go in disbelief, finally awakening from my shock. This couldn’t be
happening. There had to be something he could do. Even though I knew I couldn’t
catch up, I ran after him. All I wanted to do was be with him, I couldn’t let
him go.
Then
he jumped, right into the midst of the waves.
Peter
just managed to pull me back from the edge of the cliff by my jacket, holding
me tightly against him.
»Nooooo,«
I screamed out at the sea. After Calum’s jump, the water had settled down
immediately; it now lay before us, ghostly calm.
Peter
let me go. I fell to my knees, sobbing. All of my senses were numb. I couldn’t
understand what Bree and Ethan were saying to me, and I didn’t move when Peter
tried to pull me up. Only when Sophie leant over and whispered in my ear: »It’s
over, Emma. He’s gone,« did I stand up and let them lead me back to the house.

was written quickly in the year 2009. But it was not easy to find a publisher. However,
in 2011 I grabbed the chance this story to publish with amazon. Since I sold over
160,000 copies and my books almost were 600 days in the German Top 100 of the
Kindle Charts.
Now
Emma's und Calum's story will be told in three languages - in German, English
and French.
