“Losers!” I grinned. “They just couldn’t stand the pace, could they?”
We said goodnight to everyone and promised to keep in touch with Shelley. As we went upstairs Lyndz’s mum and dad were spinning round together in the centre of a circle whilst everyone else clapped.
“What are they like?” Lyndz groaned. But you could tell that she was really chuffed that they both looked so happy.
We crashed out as soon as we got into bed. No midnight feast, nothing.
It was a huge shock to the system, having to get up early the next day. Not only that, but as soon as we’d had breakfast Dad was eager to be off.
“Thank you so much, Uncle Bob!” We all hugged him, before we piled into Lyndz’s van. “We’ve had the best time ever!”
“Well, you’re welcome to come back whenever you want!” he grinned warmly. “I can’t guarantee you any vampires, but we have ghosts a-plenty in these parts!”
As we were driving off, Fliss said, “Do you think there really
are
ghosts here? He seemed pretty serious, didn’t he?”
“I don’t know about ghosts, Fliss,” Lyndz’s mum piped up from the front. “But there’s certainly magic in the air at Bob’s place.”
Lyndz’s father smiled at her and she leaned over and stroked his cheek.
“Yukarama!” Lyndz moaned, and we all burst out laughing.
“You know, we never did ask Molly whether it was her and Carli who pretended to be Headless Eric that night,” Frankie mused.
“That’s right! We’ll ask the slimy snake as soon as we stop,” I promised.
And that’s exactly what we did. But you know what? She just went very white and stuttered:
“W-we thought it was you!”
“What? That second time, when Mum turned on the lights?” I asked.
“Yeah. Mum told us that she thought you’d been having a laugh the night before. So when we heard the noises again we were coming to sort you out!” Molly explained. We could see by her face that she was dead serious.
“So if it wasn’t you,” Fliss squealed, “who was it?”
Now I don’t know about you, but I have serious doubts about the whole thing. Part of me thinks that maybe it was Uncle Bob having a laugh. You’ve seen what a barmy old goat he can be. But part of me really believes it
was
Headless Eric spooking us out in the attic. I reckon we’ll have to go back up to Scotland soon, to do some serious
ghost
-busting this time. What do you think?
