“That’s because we’re not going to Florida,” a familiar voice said.

Alex slowly spun around, her heart pounding. She stood up and saw Lucas standing across her.

Lucas—but how? Unless?

“I’m sorry about last weekend. I never meant to hurt you-”

“You made me miss my flight!” she gasped, “You tricked me?”

“I’m sorry about that too,” Lucas said sheepishly.

“Just who the hell do you think you are?” she snapped, her lower lip shaking. “What? You’re rich and you think you can just play around with people…”

“If I didn’t do this, I could never tell you!” he told her, his face reddening. “This whole thing’s been crazy…I- I had to do this.”

“Tell me what?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’d be willing to do this all over again just to have you close to me. Because-” he paused.

Alex was looking at him, trembling a little. “Because…?”

The words tumbled out. “I love you, Alex. I’m in love with you. I realized it today. I shouldn’t have buried my feelings. I took it too slow, because I wanted you to like me-”

“There’s no need for that,” she interrupted.

Lucas looked down and felt his composure plummet. So it was too late? “Alex—”

“There’s no need for that. Because—I’m in love with you, too,” she said; her eyes stinging with tears. She then looked away, blushing vividly.

Lucas looked up, a smile forming on his lips.

“You are?” he nearly stumbled in relief.

She nodded. “I thought it was one sided. All that I felt. I tried to make it go. But it got worse, I mean, from liking you to this… then that happened and I thought I wasn’t enough for you or your dad and—”

“He likes you,” Lucas said with a laugh. “Do you know what triggered this? He pushed me in the right direction. He bought the painting that was displayed down East.”

“That painting?” she said with a little gasp. “I just did-It looked so pretty I wanted to recreate the picture of you and your mother. Your dad noticed it? That’s like one in a million chances…”

“He did. He told me it was my mother telling him something.”

Alex shook her head and laughed as she dried her tears.

Lucas walked up to her. “Never again, I’m never letting you cry like this again. I’m never letting go of you.”

Alex smiled as she felt Lucas’ embrace around her. Then she looked up to his face. “Luke, where are we going?”

Lucas grinned. “Santorini.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

She punched Lucas’ arm.

“Ow! What?”

“I didn’t bring any—”

He waved his hand. “Neither have I. We’ll buy it there,” Lucas said casually.

She shook her head. “You are such a—”

“A what?”

“Nothing. So what now?” she asked taking a seat, smiling and still a little stunned at everything that had happened in the course of five minutes.

He took a seat beside her. “Well we have a few more hours. So we can talk about us.”

“What else is there to talk about?” she teased.

“Serious talk. About you and me. A future.”

“Together?”

“What? Do you want Jason to end up with me instead?”

They both laughed.

“So… a future?”

“Yes, a future,” Lucas nodded. “Call it love at first trip, Alex.”

Alex smiled. “For once I’m glad I wore heels.”

He nodded. “So am I.”

“Any more surprises?” she asked him.

He shook his head. “None yet,” he replied.

Lucas bit back a smile. Tucked safely in his breast pocket was a diamond and platinum ring.
