Kevin sucked in a deep breath. “I was thinking about that
too.”

Adam smiled, his dark gaze once more heading south. “Mmm.
Then I like what thinking about that does to you.”

Kevin eyed the crutch. “Can we…can you?”

Adam raised his brows. “I think I can, but what about you? I
thought there was no touching without Jill.”

Kevin met Adam’s gaze. “It’s different now. We’re all in
this together whether it’s you and me or all three of us. Does it bother you
that I still make love to Jill in our room without you?”

Adam shook his head.

“Just as it doesn’t bother me to know you and Jill are
together without me.” When Adam started, Kevin chuckled. “I see the way she
blushes around you. It’s all right, dude. I know you haven’t been hands-off.
She told me about the two of you at the hotel.”

Adam held his gaze. “I care about her. I have right from the
start.”

Kevin wrapped his arms around Hell’s waist, being careful of
his bandaged leg as he brought their hips together. “It’s okay. Right now,
though, what I would really like is to have you fuck me.”

“Hell yes.”

They ended up in Hell’s room after Kevin retrieved a bottle
of lube and a condom. Setting it aside for the time being, Adam took him in his
arms so they could kiss. Adam was rougher, hungrier than Jill when he kissed,
and Kevin reveled in it, hoping that same roughness would translate into their
lovemaking.

“Kneel on the bed,” Adam ordered. Kevin did, half expecting
him to dive right in, so he was surprised when Adam kissed his lower back. As
his tongue traced down the center of his butt cheeks, Adam used his hands to
spread Kevin apart. “I like that you’re bare back here,” he whispered right
before Kevin felt the tip of his tongue tease his opening.

He gasped, an aroused shiver going through him. He’d nearly
come the first time Jill had rimmed him, but Adam brought it to a whole new
level. He drew Kevin’s cock back so he could stroke him while he licked from
his asshole to his nuts.

“Oh, Hell, that’s fantastic.”

“I’m going to get my fingers in to relax you. Damn, Kevin,
you have the sexiest ass.”

Kevin laughed. “Guess I never really thought about it that
way, but man, I’m so looking forward to feeling your cock there.”

“I’ll start with this.” Lube squirted then Adam’s finger
slipped past the tight outer ring of his ass and Kevin forced himself to relax
and let him in. Adam worked his finger back and forth, hitting a spot that
nearly made Kevin crawl out of his skin. He gasped, pushing back against Adam’s
hand, and his partner added another finger.

As if he were a blind man, Kevin fumbled for his cock and
began stroking in rhythm with Hell’s thrusting fingers.

“Slow down, baby,” Adam growled. “No coming before I get
inside you.”

Kevin put both hands back on the bed, his breathing exploded
in short gasps. “Then do it. Fuck me.”

He heard the condom packet tear and a moment later, Adam’s
fingers slipped out to be replaced by the broader, blunter probe of his cock.
Kevin groaned as Adam pushed forward. The burn was almost more than he thought
he could stand. Out of reflex, his hole tightened.

Adam smacked his ass hard. “Push back as if you’re trying to
push me out. It’ll open you.”

Kevin panted as he tried to do what Adam told him to. There
was an instant of pain and then he was filled. Adam’s cock slowly pumped in and
out, his hands holding and rubbing Kevin’s hips.

“You okay?” Adam asked.

“Yeah. You?”

He heard a chuckle. “Never better. Damn, you are so tight, I
just want to come and come.”

Adam’s slow strokes were driving Kevin wild. He looked down
to see his dick was stiff. Damn, he was going to come without even touching it.
As his partner’s strokes increased in speed, Kevin’s reaction was swift, his
cock letting loose a stream of cum.

“That’s it, baby.” Adam groaned, thrust two more times in
quick succession then slumped over Kevin’s back as he orgasmed. Adam’s lips
caressed the back of his neck before moving next to his ear. “I love you, bro.”

Kevin nodded. “Right there with you.”

A slight noise made Kevin turn. Jill stood in the doorway,
her hair mussed and a sleepy smile on her face.

“That was beautiful,” she whispered.

Kevin extended his hand, palm up, and she joined them,
kissing Adam with slow deliberation.

* * * * *

Adam waited for Kevin a little warily the next morning. They
were scheduled to meet with the internal affairs people first thing, so the
last thing he needed was to see his partner guilting about what they’d done
last night. When Kevin entered the kitchen and smiled at him, Adam released the
breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

“Where’s Jill?” his partner asked.

“She went out for a run. I poured you some coffee in a go
cup. We should probably get going.”

They were silent driving in to work. Adam glanced at Kevin a
couple times, saw the tension reflected in the tightness of his mouth and the
narrowing of his eyes. He wanted to be able to reassure him, but the truth was,
Adam was just as nervous. Finally, unable to stand the silence any longer, Adam
asked what nagged at him.

“We okay? About last night? About what,” he had to clear his
throat, “what I said?”

Kevin glanced at him, the tension still apparent. “And what
we did? Yeah.”

And that had to be enough, because, after all, Adam reminded
himself, this wasn’t the time to go all girly, needing to talk everything to
death.

Adam used a cane, but he was impatient with the need to move
so slowly and with the unwarranted attention it drew. To his horror, he
discovered the cane was a chick-magnet multiplier. As they bent over his desk,
touching his arm and even stroking his hair, he glanced up and caught the smirk
on Kevin’s face. Well, at least his torture seemed to be providing his partner
some amusement. Still, he couldn’t help thinking how much he wished it was
Kevin and Jill.

“Guys?” Sarge called from the doorway. “They’re ready for
you in the conference room.”

Kevin stood, grabbed Adam’s cane and waded through the
crowd. “‘Scuse us, ladies. Hell and I got a date.”

It made everyone laugh. Only Adam saw the reassurance there
in Kevin’s eyes that everything was cool.

“Thanks, man.” Adam took the cane and levered to his feet.

Sarge waited for them, leading the way along the hallway to
the conference room at the end. Adam took a deep breath as Sarge opened the
door for them to pass. Kevin sat next to him, and Adam noticed the way his
knuckles had whitened as he gripped the armrests on his chair. Jesus, the guy
acted as if he were awaiting execution.

Chapter Thirteen

In all his years as a police officer, Kevin couldn’t
remember feeling as anxious as he did at this moment, not even when he’d looked
and seen the bore of Adam’s pistol pointed straight at him.

“Gentlemen,” the lead investigator began. He was a stocky
man with steel-gray, close-cropped hair. His dark suit and tie only added to
his natural intimidation factor. “We’re here to discuss the results of our
investigation in the wake of the Grady Shelby shooting. In hindsight, you
should never have gone in without additional backup, but since you had the
permission of your immediate supervisor and followed his instructions to use
your vests and exercise due caution, we find no fault there with your actions.”

He looked at Sarge with slightly narrowed eyes as if to say
there might be some discussion still to be had with him. Kevin nearly opened his
mouth to speak in his boss’s defense, but Adam bumped his ankle with the tip of
his cane, catching his eye and giving a slight shake of his head.

“In our investigation, our primary concern was in how the
suspect managed to shift locations without the knowledge of either officer on
the scene, thereby putting both of you once more in the line of fire.”

Kevin’s heart pounded. This was it. Though he’d gone over it
again and again, he could remember taking his eyes off that barn for only a
second or two at most. Yet that must have been it and he’d take the blame.

“The only logical time frame was in those minutes following
Detective Heller’s movement to pull Detective Ramsey to safety around the side
of the house. According to interviews with you both, Ramsey was unconscious for
approximately two minutes and Heller was engaged in assessing injuries to both
Ramsey and himself. It’s our conclusion that Shelby had to have moved during
this time. Why he then chose to wait as long as he did before approaching, we can
only speculate. However, we find you acted in accordance with proper procedure
based on the knowledge available to you at the time. Officer Heller’s
subsequent shooting of Shelby is also ruled as justified defense of himself and
his partner.”

Kevin blew out the breath he’d been holding, hearing Hell do
the same. They were cleared. Their weapons were being returned to them. As
everyone rose, Kevin automatically offered a hand to Adam. With a quirk of his
wide mouth, his partner took it, allowing himself to be pulled to his feet.

As they moved through the hall, Adam said, “I need to stop
at the pisser.”

Kevin took a deep breath. “Me too.”

Sarge shook his head. “Maybe after a few more of these
sessions, you guys won’t let IA scare the piss out of you.” He ambled away with
a laugh. “Don’t take too long. Addy Brown and her parents are going to be here
in a few minutes.”

He disappeared around the corner.

Adam shoved open the men’s room door, checked to make sure
the stalls were empty then cornered Kevin with his back against the door so no
one else could come in. Their gazes met and held for the longest time. Kevin
let out a deep breath and pulled Adam into a tight hug. For several seconds,
they held each other and rocked back and forth.

“You okay?” Adam mumbled against his ear.

“I am now. Come on, dude. We got work to do.”

Adam didn’t want to work. He wanted to keep holding Kevin,
wanted to drag him back to the house, their house, and hold Jill too. Along
with his relief they were fully back to work was the knowledge he couldn’t keep
taking advantage of his partner. He would have to go home to his apartment. His
fucking empty apartment. Alone.

Adam put it behind him for a while as they met with Addy
Brown and her family. Unlike Kevin, he hadn’t gotten a glimpse of her at the
farm, so this was his first real opportunity to see her. With her dark hair and
fair skin, she was as fresh-faced and pretty as her pictures. At first glimpse,
she looked no different, but deep in her eyes, he glimpsed new maturity and
lingering shadows that might never go away.

Despite what had happened to her, she hugged him and Kevin,
thanking them for saving her. Her parents were equally grateful.

“We want to thank you both,” her father said gravely, “for
never believing she was a runaway. Your faith in her ultimately saved her
life.”

After they’d gone, Kevin seemed abnormally quiet. Adam
glanced at him a couple times, but couldn’t read anything in his partner’s
expression. When lunchtime hit, Kevin stood. “I-uh-I’m meeting Jill for lunch.
You want me to bring you something back?”

No invite to go along. Adam did his best poker face. “Yeah,
that’d be great. Thanks, man.”

Kevin hurried from the room and Adam sat stone-still, his
heart hurting. He was being an ass, making an ass out of himself. Kevin and
Jill hadn’t promised any permanent arrangement. He cleared his throat and
realized now that he was back at work, there was no reason he couldn’t move
back into his apartment. By the time Kevin returned from lunch, Adam had even
convinced himself it was the right thing to do. He thanked his partner for the
sandwich he’d brought back and tasted absolutely none of it.

“Listen, Kev. I’ve been thinking. I should probably move
back into my own place after work tonight.” He tried a brief smile, but it didn’t
feel very successful, especially when Kevin just stared at him. After a second,
Adam snapped. “Don’t you have anything to say?”

Kevin’s mouth tightened. “If that’s what you want.”

When he simply pushed back his chair and left the room, Adam
sat staring at the blotter on his desk, impotently fuming.
If that’s what
you want?
Why didn’t he just say
, Great, it’s about time you took your
prick out of my life and my wife?

When Kevin didn’t immediately come back, Adam’s anger
solidified. He’d known this would come. He just hadn’t figured it would be
quite so fast. They’d given him the gratitude sex, but now the door shut.
Fuck.
He couldn’t take it.

Adam opened a new Word document, hurriedly pounding out a
resignation letter. He knew he could get his old job back. The chief had told
him he’d find a way to bring him back on staff anytime he decided he’d had
enough big-city police force politics. Well, the time was now, because he sure
as hell couldn’t stand working with Kevin after this was over.

His partner returned a half hour later, still as tense as
when he’d left. As the end of their shift neared, he finally looked up from the
paperwork he’d labored over. “Jill and I want you to have dinner with us then
we’ll help you pack, if that’s what you want.”

“Fuck you,” Adam whispered so quietly no one else could
hear. He stared at his desk.

“Damn it, Adam. Come eat the fucking meal, for Jill’s sake.
Then we need to talk.”

While Kevin drove, Adam stared out the passenger window. He
felt as if they’d done this before. Neither said a word as Kevin pulled into
the garage and shut the door behind them.

This was it then. After the best few days of his life, they
were going to cut things off. Kevin and Jill had promised only one night.
Though it had become so much more. At least he’d thought it had. Stupid Adam.
He’d made love to Kevin, played and petted with Jill and thought it was okay.
If
that’s what you want.

The door opened. Jill smiled at him and stood aside. “Adam!
Come on in.”

Kevin followed behind him without saying a word. Adam
watched the gentle sway of Jill’s hips, knowing exactly what lay beneath her
clothes. He’d cherish what time he’d had with them, loving and being loved. But
it had just been sex after all. A wave of anger washed through him. He didn’t
want it to end. He wanted them both in his life, in his bed.

They entered the comfortable den at the back of the house.
The TV was off and flames danced in the fireplace. Jill stopped inside the door
and slid her arm around his neck, giving him a soft kiss on the lips. Kevin
closed the distance behind him, kissing first Jill then tilting his head to
brush his lips along Adam’s neck. He should probably pull away from them, but
he couldn’t.

For as long as he lived, Adam would never get tired of
feeling the rasp of Kevin’s skin against his, of smelling the subtle cologne he
wore. If this was goodbye, he would remember ever minute…but he wouldn’t drag
it out.

He stepped back, jamming his hands in his pockets. “You said
you had something you wanted to talk to me about.”

“Why don’t we sit?” Jill suggested.

Adam tensed. “I think I’d rather stand. Thanks.”

She looked at him quizzically. “All right. Can I get you a
beer?”

“No.” He glanced between them. “Look, can we get this over
with?”

Kevin pulled a small box from his pocket. “What exactly is
this
you think we need to get over with?”

“It’s the part where you tell me what a great time we’ve had
together, but it’s time to move on. After all, it was only supposed to be one
night and we’ve dragged it out far longer with the whole injury and gratitude
shit.”

Jill took the box from Kevin and now they were both coming
toward him. “But that’s not what this is about.” She took his hand, gently
turning it palm up and setting the gift-wrapped box in it. “Open it.”

He took a deep breath, uncertainty now replacing his
conviction they wanted to end things. His fingers trembled a bit as he untied
the bow and lifted the lid. Inside was a key. Adam lifted his gaze. Kevin’s
expression was hooded, Jill’s expectant.

“A key?”

“To our house,” Jill whispered.

Adam stared at it, blinking. “I thought…today when you went
to lunch…”

“We want you to move in, Hell,” Kevin added. “I took Jill to
lunch so we could discuss it. I wanted to make sure she felt the same way
before I opened my mouth. Then you shocked the shit out of me by saying you
wanted to move back to your apartment. Jesus, man, one night was never enough.
I want you for a partner on and off the job. We love you.”

“Jill?” Adam’s hope soared.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed close. “Say
yes, Adam. We even bought a king-size bed…well, I did…and had it moved in this
afternoon.”

Feeling her pressed so close to him had the effect it always
did. His cock hardened and when he let his gaze slide below Kevin’s belt, he
saw his partner in the exact same condition. Adam set the box and the key on
the table beside him.

“A king-size bed?”

Kevin nodded, stepping behind Jill so she was sandwiched
between them. He bent and nibbled the side of her neck before meeting and
holding Adam’s gaze. “Maybe we should try it out. Think you can sleep with the
two of us?”

“Sleep?”

Kevin laughed. “And a few other things. The sleep will come
later.”

Jill unzipped his fly. “Let’s check it out. Dinner won’t be
ready for at least an hour. Did I mention I love you?”

Adam shook his head. She hugged him and Kevin joined in.
“Say yes you’ll stay, Hell.”

“More than one night?”

Jill stroked his cheek. “Forever.”

He sucked in a deep breath, felt their love surrounding him
and his own love expanding. There was enough to go around for all of them.
