He couldn’t argue with the truth of that, so he waited for his mate to come to her own peace within herself, at least enough that she could move on with whatever she wanted to pursue today. True peace would take longer, but he’d be here for her each step of the way.
Finally, she looked at him, her green eyes clear and bright, not with tears but high emotion. “Will you still want me, even if I never take the mating mark? Would you always call me your mate, or would you find someone else?”
His chest went tight, warmth flooding through it. “I notice you didn’t mention anything about forcing you.”
The look she gave him from under her brows was exasperated. “Because that’d never happen. Please give me enough credit to acknowledge I know that much about you.”
“I hoped you did.” The smile grew on his face, because though she acted like it was nothing, the fact Regan treated it so matter-of-factly showed how much had changed in their short time together. “And I hope you do, take the bite. I won’t ever lie about that. But if you won’t, I still want you beside me always. I want you to be my right hand. Guide the pack with me. Protect them with me. There’s no one I’d trust their safety to more.”
“I’m not saying I won’t.” Her voice held a pleading note within it, though her words were strong and sure. “I’m saying I can’t, not right now. I have to work through some things first.”
“I want to be with you as you work through them. As long as you promise you won’t leave me, I can accept any other decision.”
She moved now, stretching slightly to wrap her hands in his hair. “Thank you for giving me this time, but I’m never going to leave you again.” She framed his face with her hands, kissing every inch of skin bared to her before moving to his lips. Her mouth was sure on his, holding a sacred promise that deepened as their tongues met and breaths mingled. She was giving everything of herself, laying herself open, offering whatever he would accept – and he wanted everything. He wanted forever, on whatever terms he could have.
She was strong and courageous, loving and nurturing, fierce and wild – she was
everything.
And she was his.
They broke apart, panting slightly in the aftermath, and as one, smiles lit their faces, their eyes fixed on each other. “I love you,” Regan said, and those clever, calculating green eyes gleamed. “I love the wolf, and I love the man. I want to remain at your side and support all of what you are, and I want to guide and protect our pack.”
He crushed her to him, her words soothing the last of his fears. With her as the alpha female, the pack would only grow and strengthen, and with her loving him…well, his life would be perfect. “It won’t be easy.”
Her smile formed against his neck. “Nothing worthwhile ever is. Luckily we’re strong enough that together we can fight anything.”
His eyes closing, he lay his head against hers, snuggling her deeper into his chest. There were still battles ahead, demons both inside and out to fight, but none of that worried him. His woman was more than capable of fighting the upcoming battles, and he would trust in her. Always, he would trust in her. “Luckily.”
