Route 7 is a dangerous place to walk. In July of 1994, a Stoneham man named CHARLES McCAUSLAND was struck by a car and killed here, an event which foreshadows STEPHEN KING’s accident. King’s accident (and JAKE CHAMBERS’s death) takes place on the section of tarmac known as SLAB CITY HILL. In 1977, Roland and EDDIE meet CHEVIN OF CHAYVEN, a CHILD OF RODERICK, while they are driving along this road. VI:181, VI:403, VI:406, VI:410, VII:46, VII:48–53

MISSISSIPPI (STATE OF)

Back in 1964, ODETTA HOLMES (one of SUSANNAH DEAN’s previous personalities) spent three days in an OXFORD, Mississippi, jail. She was incarcerated for her participation in the Civil Rights Movement. In
Song of Susannah,
we learn that Susannah was part of the voter registration campaign which took place in this state during the summer of ’64, nicknamed Freedom Summer. On June 21, 1964, three VOTER REGISTRATION BOYS—JAMES CHANEY, ANDREW GOODMAN, and MICHAEL SCHWERNER—were attacked and killed by the Ku Klux Klan.

During his travels along the HIGHWAYS IN HIDING, PERE CALLAHAN spent some time in Mississippi. His experiences in the state were much better than Susannah’s.

OXFORD:
Oxford was made famous (or infamous) by the Bob Dylan song “Oxford Town” and by the events upon which the song was based. In 1962, there were riots on the University of Mississippi campus based on the university’s forced acceptance of its first black student, James Meredith. Meredith, whose acceptance at the university had been rescinded once it was discovered that he was dark-skinned, had fought for reacceptance for more than a year before the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the state could not deny him admission based on color. Meredith was escorted to campus by federal marshals but the city of Oxford erupted in violence. Before the National Guard could arrive, two students were killed.

SUSANNAH DEAN’s three-day incarceration in a Mississippi jail (which she refers to as a short season in hell) came about because of her participation in the nonviolent Civil Rights Movement. Like Meredith’s antagonists, Susannah’s captors were racists abusing their legal power. Ole Miss was the site of the 1962 riots which Bob Dylan immortalized in his song “Oxford Town.” The riots were the result of the university’s forced acceptance of its first black student, James Meredith. We are told that DAMLI HOUSE, located in the DEVAR-TOI in END-WORLD, would look at home on the campus of Ole Miss.
