Then, as the crowds began to thin, the four of us found ourselves standing underneath the clock, looking up at it, almost reverently.

“I wonder what this clock will see over the next few years,” I said.

“There’s no telling,” George said.

“Well, whatever it is, I guess we’ll start finding out tomorrow,” a voice behind us said.

We all turned and saw Evaline Waters with a big grin on her face.

“What do you mean, Ms. Waters?” Bess asked.

“Mrs. Mahoney has asked me to be the head librarian, at least temporarily,” Ms. Waters said. “Since the library is now short
two
librarians, I told her I would.”

“Oh, it’ll be just like old times,” I said. I gave Ms. Waters a big hug.

“I’ll need some help, though,” Ms. Water said. “I was sort of counting on all four of you.”

“Oh, we’ll be glad to do whatever you need us to do,” Bess said.

“Right,” I agreed. “After all, we need somebody to guard the library clock to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.”
