Chapter 16

Nat

T
he happiness I felt when Summer said “yes” to
my proposal was the best moment in my life. I knew it was right as soon as I
asked her. It felt right, and it felt good.

No
guilt, no complex, no wanting to bottle up my feelings and lumping it all in
until I could explode.

I’ve
never acted so fast in my life. I got everything set for a wedding in minutes.
Luis, Hector, my parents, Summer’s parents, Summer and Rachel were all informed
and ready to go for tonight.

The
only person I had been dreading to see, was Drew.

But
we had to, and it was the last step in seeing if there were any regrets with
Summer and Drew.

Summer
and I met Drew at his place on top of the Donovan Dynamics Los Angeles
building. We gave him 5 minutes before visiting him there.

He
answered the door in his boxers, his hair rumpled, and lipstick marks all over
him.

I
glanced at Summer, and she looked down. One thing about Drew losing his
memories about Summer, was that he had no idea how hurtful it looked when he
paraded women around in front of her.

If
he had deliberately broken up with Summer and was parading women in front of
her with no regard to her feelings and dignity, I would have set him straight.

But
here he was acting like some drunken frat boy and hanging out with some floozy,
who came to the door all wrapped in plastic wrap. I avoided looking at her
parts that should have been covered up but was fully on display.

“Oh
hey Nat and Summer,” Drew said. “You did show up. Carmel and I were just
finishing up for the night. Come in.”

We
walked in and sat down on a cleaned part of the leather sofa, while Carmel
disappeared into Drew’s room. She came back out wearing Summer’s red and white
silk kimono.

Summer
looked like she wanted to snatch it off of Carmel.

“So
guys,” Drew asked. “What’s going on?”

“Drew,”
I said, getting down to it. “Do you remember anything about Summer at all?”

Drew
looked at Summer and smiled. “You are punking me, aren’t you? Summer’s your
girlfriend. Had been for years. What kind of a question is that?”

I
took out a photo of Summer with Drew, also the invitation I received to attend
their wedding. I showed it to Drew. “Remember this? You should. You and Summer
were engaged. You were about to get married to her. And the reason why her
clothes are here is because she stayed with you all the time. You two were
inseparable.”

Drew’s
face was frozen as he touched the wedding invitation over and over again. He
shook his head. “I don’t recall being with Summer.”

“You
loved her so much, Drew, you fought off her rapist attacker, you switched
schools to attend USC to be with her…” I wished I could stop, but I had to be
fair and let Drew have this last fighting chance to be with Summer, if she
choose.

Drew
got up and went over to Carmel. He handed her her clothes and said, “I think it’s
time you went home.”

“What?”
Carmel asked. “So it was true about you and this woman?”

Drew
said, “Whether it is or not, I don’t want you here.”

Carmel
swore, grabbed her clothes, throwing off Summer’s kimono, and slammed the door
on her way out.

“Summer,”
Drew said. “I remember having a crush on you for so long when we were kids. But
you always wanted Nat. I wished I could remember how we got to being engaged,
but I’m drawing a blank. I really don’t remember. But what it’s worth, I am so
sorry if I broke your heart, and we are no longer together.”

I
looked at Drew closely. He really didn’t remember anything.

Perhaps
it was for the best.

Drew
got up and began clearing up things around his place. He looked confused,
bewildered, and a bit sad.

“Do
you want to go through with the wedding?” I asked Summer. There was the
possibility Summer would go back to Drew.

Summer
turned to Drew, “Drew, I analyzed your checkup, and I think you should know you’re
fine. Your medication isn’t causing the blackouts. But I think you need to take
a vacation. Stop stressing yourself. I think,” she turned away for a second and
swallowed. “You need to find someone who would help you grow, but at a pace you’re
comfortable with, and in a way you could feel like yourself. With us, in a way,
we were too different, and I wanted you to be more like, well, Nat. You became
like him, but it was eating you up. Until you needed to escape. I don’t ever
want to put you in that position again, no matter how much I loved you. You
should be free to be yourself. You should be free to love again, as I have
fallen again back in love with Nat.”

“Drew,”
I said, patting his shoulder. “I’d like to say I’m sorry, but I’m not. You’ve
had your chance with Summer, and now it’s mine. We’d like you to come to the
wedding with us on the jet, but you are fine to decline.”

I
looked at Summer and then Drew.

Drew
stood up and said, “I’ll get my things. I wouldn’t miss my brother and his
woman’s wedding for anything. Let bygones be bygones, I say.”

So
that was that, and Drew came with us on our way to the compound where everyone
had gathered to join us.

Epilogue

Rachel

S
ummer and Nat had the most beautiful
and elegant wedding ever planned within a couple of hours. I couldn’t have done
a better job than Nat. Once again, he had proven to be amazing at anything and
everything. Like Summer. She really was Nat’s equal. She never had to baby him
like she did Drew. She never had to second guess him and his fidelity.

Drew,
as much as I loved him as my brother, was a handful. But still had captured
Summer’s heart. She was serious about marrying him. She wouldn’t have chosen
him before if she didn’t.

Summer
was the type of woman who put everything into a relationship. She gave it her
all, and then some. She also gave whatever she was focused on her all, like her
career and her legacy for Aunt Sookie. She was my role model, but she was also
the woman guys fell for. I was just glad it wasn’t Astor Fairway. I still have
hopes for him noticing me.

But
then there was Luis now who surprises me everytime we get together.

Teddy,
whom I love to break and seduce. There was so much to him than him being a
statue. I love breaking that discipline.

Not
to mention all the other men at the compound and outside. I was like the female
version of Drew, and in a way, I was glad Summer ended up with Nat. Drew was my
twin, and sharing the same genes and physical attributes, we were driven, by
sex, by adrenaline, by challenges, and people saying “we could not” to us.

I
was a Donovan, by blood, and being a Donovan, I knew Drew was struggling to
stay with Summer after 10 years, while he had women after women, opportunities
after opportunities thrown at him.

He
would cry over Summer for a good while, I was sure when he realized what he
gave up. But he would be back on the market again, sampling everything he
could.

I
wouldn’t cry over Drew Donovan losing Summer to Nat. He was a Donovan, and like
our father, we have a hard time staying still.

The
infidelity gene? I hope there wasn’t something like that, but maybe if I was
attesting to it. I couldn’t be committed to one man or another. I definitely
didn’t want that, and I definitely wanted to be just as respected for me, for
my role as an owner and partner at Donovan Dynamics, and for my career as an
actress.

I
know Nat disapproved of what I was doing at the compound. Drew would too,
although he would be just like me if this place was filled with good-looking
hot girls for the taking.

But
I had found some valuable information while partaking in the taking of the
hottest single physically fit men on the planet. The spy whom Nat wanted to
trap on his compound was not at the compound when Nat was gone with Summer on
their mission.

The
spy was right there with them. And I have a mission of my own to find out who.
