About the Author

Elaine Ferguson, MD, is an Ivy League-educated physician

and a graduate of Brown University and the Duke University School

of Medicine. She did her residency training at the University of Chicago’s Hospitals and Clinics and has practiced holistic medicine for over two decades in the Chicago area both in private practice and as a corporate administrator. Her career highlights include practicing medicine at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. She was also

the founding medical director of one of the nation’s first alternative medicine independent practice associations—designed to provide

primary care to a major insurance carrier.

In her current position as Senior Medical Director for the U.S.

Postal Service Great Lakes Area, which includes Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Minnesota, she plays an administrative role in which she’s responsible for ensuring the well-being of employees, as well as customers, and she supervises the USPS National Health Promotion Program. Dr. Ferguson also has a consult-

ing practice, One Health, where she she consults with health care

companies and other businesses to improve health related outcomes.

For several years, Dr. Ferguson wrote a column, “Spirituality and

Health,” for
Alternative Medicine Digest Magazine
. She currently writes for her blog at DrElaine.com. She is creator of a line of educa-tional audios and workbooks for people with various physical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, post-surgical recovery, called

“How to Get Well Faster.”

Dr. Ferguson has lectured on holistic medicine at colleges, universities, and medical schools—among them Brown University, Medi-

cal College of Ohio, and the University of Chicago—and at inter-

national medical conferences. In the early 1990s, she taught mind/

body medicine at DePaul University’s Foundations of Holistic Health (now-defunct), one of the first graduate level holistic medicine programs in the United States. She also taught a course on community

health at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Dr. Ferguson testified on a panel of experts at congressional hearings convened by Congressman Louis Stokes of Cleveland to explore

advances in nutrition and complementary and alternative medicine

(NCAM). She was also a member of the American Cancer Society’s,

Committee on Alternative Cancer Therapies.

In her spare time, Dr. Ferguson paints, gardens, and engages in

the textile arts. She lives with her husband, Victor Johnson, in Val-paraiso, Indiana.
