Damn mate link.
She couldn’t even yell at him without feeling guilty. Jessica giggled, and Kayla shot her an exasperated look. It’d been nearly nine months since the mating link had kicked in, so she should be used to having no secrets.
Nobody could explain why it had taken so long for the link to develop, or why David’s body had started producing the enzyme beforehand, or why, when the link did kick in, that it happened immediately instead of growing over time. Jessica had suggested that Kayla’s previous relationship—that wasn’t a secret any more either—had given her the ability to close herself off to others. It had taken the shock and fear of what had seemed their betrayal at the time to force her into realizing that her love for them surmounted everything else.
It was as good a theory as any. Kayla still had a moment or two of worry now and then, but the link she had with Jessica and David went both ways. Insecurity couldn’t take root when she was continually aware of her lovers’ feelings for her and for each other.
Jessica looked concerned by Kayla’s thoughts, but then she brightened again, managing to smile through a contraction all three of them could feel. Damn. How the hell had Sesturians survived for so many generations? Being able to feel your lovers’ pain was definitely an unpleasant experience, especially when you were partially responsible for the agony.
“Don’t worry, honey,” David said to Kayla as he lifted Jessica into his arms. “The Sesturian doctors already know we’re on our way.” He carried Jessica out to the car, and Kayla hurriedly locked the front door to follow them.
Fourteen painful, excruciating, mind-wrenching hours later, their daughter gave a small cry as she entered the world. Kayla smiled as she kissed her lovers and then held their beautiful daughter close. A moment later a tiny little fist wrapped around Kayla’s finger and ensnared her heart.
Kayla felt tears film her eyes as everyone left the room and let the new parents spend some alone time with their tiny daughter. Kayla kissed Jessica and then David again as emotion swamped her.
She glanced at the clock. In about ten minutes she was going to meet her parents-in-law. Who in their right mind signed up for four mothers-in-law? Or had a marriage where they all knew exactly what the others were thinking? Or had children with three parents and dual citizenship that spanned two galaxies?
Kayla smiled as she looked at her beautiful new daughter.
She did.
And she felt like the luckiest woman in the universe.
