“Wayne?” I cut in when he stopped to take a breath. “Do you still want to marry me?”
His eyebrows rose in confusion. Then he nodded slowly. I reached for his hand.
“Will you marry me?” I asked formally.
“But… but why, Kate?” he asked back. “I’m not worth—”
‘The answer is ‘I do,’ kid,” came Ace’s muttered prompt from behind.
“I do?” whispered Wayne.
Ace and I both groaned.
Wayne cleared his throat and tried again.
“I do!” he boomed, loud enough to wake the dead.
I took a quick look around me to make sure he hadn’t. Then I stood to seal his acceptance with a kiss.
