But as he lay there, on the bed, looking at the screen, Mirian realized he wouldn't have changed this for anything in the world. One look at those two specks of life, and he was already irrevocably in love with them.

"It is too soon to tell the gender of the children," the doctor said, "but in a few weeks, we'll probably know more."

Mirian nodded, although he didn't think he could speak. He only snapped out of his trance when he realized the doctor was starting to shut down the ultrasound machine. "Wait... I want to look at them a bit more."

"Of course," the doctor said. "I will also print this so that you can take it home and have it with you whenever you wish."

"Thank you," Frey answered. "We'd like that."

He sounded a little choked up too, to the point that even without their bond, Mirian would have realized how much this meant for Frey. As it was, their connection pulsed with love and possessive pride. Frey's wolf was practically preening at the sight of the twins, which made Mirian want to roll his eyes a little. Of course his mate would feel smug over his own virility. Really, Mirian would have been irritated with him if he wasn't so in love.

Besides, Frey's smugness was only matched by his protectiveness. "When should we come see you again?" he asked the doctor.

"Once a week should suffice, unless you experience any discomfort." The doctor gave Mirian a soft, patient look. "Keep in mind that while a werewolf pregnancy tends to advance quickly, that's not necessarily a guarantee for you."

Mirian nodded. The second Bearer of the Montblanc pack, Mercury, tended to complain a lot about it, since apparently, Julian's pregnancy had been shorter than his own. This was still a new field, and the variations appeared to be endless.

"Remember to listen to your body," the doctor continued. "You are a Bearer, so you will adapt to this, but that doesn't mean you don't need to be careful and take precautions."

"Thank you for all your help, Doctor," Mirian said. "I will remember."

The doctor sent them off with a thousand other recommendations, including references to Mirian's diet, his sleeping patterns and even their sex life. Mirian would have been mortified if he wasn't so relieved.

"I'm really glad we had Julian's experience to draw on. I was worried about finding someone competent to help us."

Frey nodded. "I think a lot of people aren't nearly as dismissive toward Bearers as they seem. It's just that the terrible ones are the loudest, and the rest don't have the courage to stand up against them. But we're already changing things."

Mirian slid into the front seat of their car, while Frey got behind the wheel. He couldn't pretend he wasn't concerned, or that all their problems had been miraculously solved, but the light that had started burning inside him when he'd seen the image of his children stubbornly refused to dim.

"We are," he answered. "And we will continue doing so." He rubbed his hand over the slight mound of his belly. "For them."

"For them," Frey repeated.

As Frey started the car, Mirian thought about everything he'd found since he and Frey had met. He'd had many painful revelations, some of which had affected not only his life, but that of countless other Bearers. It still pained him, and it probably always would, but every day he spent with Frey helped soothe that wound. And who knew? Perhaps one day, he would find it in his heart to see his father again. It wouldn't be now—he wasn't ready—but in time, maybe that would change.

Until then, Mirian knew Frey was right. People were learning. Frey's family had already opened up to him. Even if they'd originally been against the mating, they were now incredibly enthusiastic about the pregnancy.

It was only the beginning. There were countless challenges heading their way, some personal, some greater than those of a lone couple. But as long as the two of them stuck together, Mirian had faith that they would be able to brave any tempest. After all, they were mates—and nothing and no one could take that from them.

About the Author

Anya Byrne is first and foremost a longtime fan of erotic romance. Starting to write her own stories was a natural progression of her devotion for the genre. Years after she put pen to paper in that very first book, she is just as enthusiastic and, let’s face it, somewhat obsessive about erotic romance and all that it entails. She is steadfast in the belief that there’s nothing quite as hot as an amazing hero—except more amazing heroes engaged in heroic hot lovin’, and has branched out into the field of self-publishing to convince even more readers of this fact. Hopefully, she will succeed.
