When Beauvoir was back in Chicago in the summer of 1950, Algren's friend Art Shay, the well-known Chicago photographer, drove her to a friend's apartment for a bath. She left the bathroom door slightly open, and Shay could not resist the temptation to poke his Leica into the opening. He captured her naked back as she stood in front of the bathroom mirror, pinning up her hair. When she heard the click of his camera, she smiled. “Naughty man,” she said. He drove her home, and since Algren was not yet back from playing poker, they sat in the car and had a long conversation about literature, friendship, and fidelity. (Gérard Bonal and Malka Ribowska,

Beauvoir was inspired by Gunnar Myrdal's book

p. 294. Jacques Lanzmann is convinced that Beauvoir and Claude Lanzmann had a strong sexual relationship. In bed, I think she was the opposite.” My interview with Jacques Lanzmann, Paris, April 22, 2004.
