The weight of this statement sunk in and the rest of them were suddenly silent and glum-faced. ‘We’ll miss you terribly,’ said Janice.
Kirsty sighed. ‘I know. I’ll miss you too. But I’ll be home in the summer and other holidays too and it’ll only be for a couple of years.’ She paused then and her eyes were teary. ‘Promise you won’t forget me?’
‘You know we won’t,’ said Clare. She stretched out her hand and touched Kirsty on the knee. ‘Sure we won’t, girls?’ she said, without taking her eyes off her friend. The others voiced their agreement and Janice forced a smile.
‘Is your dad going to give you away?’ asked Clare brightly, removing her hand and trying, Janice guessed, to generate an upbeat mood.
The corners of Kirsty’s mouth turned up. ‘Yes. And I’m going to have three bridesmaids.’
‘Chris’s granddaughters?’ said Janice. ‘I thought you said there were only two of them.’
Kirsty’s smile was secretive. ‘No, they’re going to be flowergirls. And I won’t be having bridesmaids exactly.’ She paused and looked at each of them in turn. ‘More like Matrons of Honour.’
Janice caught her breath with sudden understanding and looked at the others. Clare was smiling and realisation spread across Patsy’s features like sunlight from behind a cloud. ‘You don’t mean…us?’
Kirsty clapped her hands and rocked with laughter, her rich red hair around her face like a veil. She was crying now, silvery streaks running down her cheeks.
‘Of course I mean you! Who else in the world would I have than my three best friends?’
They clinked glasses, each woman beaming with joy while the rain pelted the windows and the wind whistled round the chimneys of the old house. It was the start of a new chapter for them all. And whatever storms this new year might bring, they were ready for them – safe and secure in a friendship that had been tested, and proven as enduring as time itself.
