“Yes,” said Ronin, his voice lower and tense. “Now leave
.”

The lead cat
laughed at the demand, but otherwise ignored Ronin. The now-human panther circled the three lovers with his lip curled and his mouth open. Chloe recognized the behavior as flehming – a typical mammalian response to ‘sample’ pheromones.

He
completed his circle then stood in front of them once more. He cocked his head to the side and said with a touch of awe, “You both love her.” He paused, considering the situation then stated matter-of-factly, “She loves you.”

Ronin, Kane and Chloe nodded their heads in unison.

“She is more than your mate, ape-men, she is your bride and that is a rarity among our kind. We will bother you no longer.” Without another word, he and his fellow cat shifted into panther form and left.

The wolf stayed and watched them a bit longer before running in front of them and disappearing into the trees.

The threesome visibly relaxed and held each other closely.

Curious
about the shifter’s comment, Chloe asked, “What did he mean when he said I am your bride? What’s the difference between that and a mate?”

Ronin answered, “A mate is a partner; a bride is part of your soul.”

“I like that,” Chloe answered. “So you could say we were meant to be.”

“
Yes,” nodded Kane. “It also explains the reason you were never afraid of me...of us.”

“
So...does that make me Bigfoot’s bride or Bigfeet’s bride?” Chloe teased.

“However you want to say it is fine with us,” laughed Kane as he kissed her temple.
“As long as we are together.”

Chloe was allowed an extension to complete her paper and she received her master of science in mycology a few months later. After petitioning the National Science Association, she received a grant to continue her research, hopefully guaranteeing the safety and seclusion of the shifters of Apple Creek Preserve.
