(Skt., ‘liberated in this life’). In Indian religions, the condition of having attained enlightenment (
kaivalya

, etc.). A jivanmukta (one who has attained the condition) is in a state of being in the world but not of it. He has reached the supreme goal and simply allows his life to run out like the fuel of a candle or the rotation of a potter's wheel after the potter has ceased to work.
