Jewish biblical and
Talmudic
commentator. He wrote commentaries on all the books of the Bible with the exception of
Ezra
,
Nehemiah
,
Chronicles
, and the final chapters of
Job
. The commentaries as they have been handed down include annotations by his students. His biblical commentaries were enormously popular, and he was influential on Christian as well as Jewish scholars. His commentary on the
Pentateuch
was the first Hebrew book to be printed (1475).
