Robinson, John A. T.
(1919–83).
Anglican theologian. Formerly a New Testament scholar at Cambridge, it was as bishop of Woolwich in SE London (1959–69) that he became a public figure. His book
Honest to God
(1963), which admitted difficulties in traditional understandings of God and prayer, sold 3½ million copies, but also brought accusations of
heresy
and atheism. His scholarly work was also controversial, particularly that which defended the earliness (pre-66 CE) date of the New Testament documents, particularly the gospel of John.
