, left foot first, ascends the steps of al-

and makes an invocation, looking toward the Ka‘ba. He then descends and crosses the valley at a run until he reaches al-Marwa where again he prays.
Sayadaw
(Burm., ‘teacher’). Burmese title for a Buddhist monk. Strictly it applies to the head of a monastery, but it is used as a general honorific.
