movement in Judaism. A student of
Dov Baer
, he was set to compose an up-to-date
Shul
n Arukh
(publ. 1814). He became the
asidic leader of Reisen in 1788. By 1801 he was settled in Lyady and known as the ‘
Rav
of Lyady’. His
Likkutei Amarim
(Collected Sayings) is the principal text of the movement. The work is also known as
Tanya
and is, unlike most
asidic works, a systematic exposition. It is often referred to as the ‘written law of the
abad’; and Shne’ur Zalman is known as Ba‘al ha-Tanya.
