Solemn League and Covenant
(in defence of Scottish Presbyterianism):
Sölle, D.
(Christian theologian):
Solomon
(Heb., Shelomoh, 10th cent. BCE). King of
Israel
. Solomon was the son of King
David
and Bathsheba. According to the biblical account, he was anointed king by
Nathan
the
prophet
and
Zadok
the
priest
, he reigned
c.
967–
c.
928 BCE and his kingdom stretched from the borders of Egypt to the Euphrates (1 Kings 5. 1). He was, however, condemned in the
aggadic
tradition for his toleration of the
idolatry
of his wives.
Solomon, Ibn Gabirol
(Jewish Spanish poet and philosopher):
Solomon, Odes of
.
A collection of forty-two short hymns in Syriac linked in manuscripts to the Psalms. Their date must be earlier than the time of Lactantius (3rd–4th cents.) who quotes them, but their unorthodox imagery and indirect reference to Christ make them difficult to place.
Solomon, Psalms of
.
A collection of
pseudepigraphical
psalms ascribed to the Israelite King
Solomon
. Originally written in Hebrew, the eighteen psalms now exist only in Gk. and Syriac versions. They probably date from the 1st cent. BCE.
Solomon, Song of
(part of Hebrew scripture):
