Ungan Donj
(Ch'an/Zen master):
Uniat(e) Churches
.
More properly Eastern Catholic or Eastern-rite Catholic Churches. Churches in union with
Rome
, but retaining their own language, customs, and
canon law
—e.g. allowing marriage of the clergy and communion in both kinds. The name ‘Uniates’ is a disparaging term used by the
Orthodox Church
with unhappy memories of what this form of association with Rome has implied. Apart from the several different rites (Antiochene, Alexandrian, Chaldean, Armenian,
Melkite
) which entered into union mainly because of the assistance the connection might bring, the
Maronite Church
has a history distinct from Orthodoxy. In India, the attempt of the Portuguese to impose W. discipline on the St Thomas Christians created various divisions. Two groups entered into union with Rome, the
Malabar Christians
and the Malankara Church. In fact, far from reinforcing local tradition, all of these unions led to a process of Latinization, which demonstrated to Orthodoxy at large that this was a process of proselytization, not of seeking a union of equals. The Eastern Catholic Churches rapidly became an obstacle to union, rather than a step towards it.
Unification Church:
Uniformity, Acts of
.
Four acts of Parliament (1549, 1552, 1559, 1662) which regulated the worship of the Church of England and the use of the
Book of Common Prayer
. The 1662 Act, part of the Restoration settlement, contained as an annex the
BCP
still in use, and required all ministers to assent to it. This Act remains on the statute-book, but has been radically amended by 1974 legislation allowing
alternative services
