Gunkel, Hermann
(1862–1932).
Biblical
scholar. Gunkel pioneered
form criticism
of biblical study. He classified the psalms according to their liturgical use and life setting, by the methods known as
formegeschichtliche
(‘form-historical’) and
gattungsgeschichtliche
(‘type-critical’). Although his categories have been much amended, his cultic interpretation of the Psalms, as a general approach, has endured.
