Once, my husband and I managed to get away, just the two of us, at Christmas. That was quite a feat, given the size of our families. But we were newly married and we wanted to establish some of our own traditions. So that Christmas, while the rest of the world enjoyed the holiday with their families, it was really only the two of us. We drank champagne, we listened to Christmas music, we exchanged gifts, and then watched old Christmas movies. We spent the day focused entirely on one another. It was a luxury we’ve rarely had since then and very satisfying to us personally. We will never forget that holiday, and someday, when the time is right, we’d both like to do it again.
