Stan turned to Jack, “I want you to have this, son, something I hope you will keep on you at all times, and cherish it, like I’ve cherished it for so many years.” Stan pulled a box out of his pocket and handed it to Jack.

Jack held the box in his hand, glanced over at Kate, and grinned. Kate flashed an excited smile at Jack because gift-giving thrilled her to no end.

He slowly opened the box to reveal a golden wedding band. Jack looked at it and was shocked. He looked back up at Stan.

“Dad, is this—”

“Yes, it is son. It’s your mom’s wedding band, I had it restored just for you, I want you to have it. Keep it on you for good luck, and always remember your mom.”

Jack didn’t know what to say, a small tear formed in the corner of his eye, but he tried to fight it off so the kids wouldn’t see him cry.

“Dad, I don’t know what to say?”

“You don’t need to say anything, Jack. Just don’t ever lose it or I will find you, and beat you down—and you know I’m still capable of doing that.”

Jack laughed and handed the white box to Kate who was elated. She knew how significant this family heirloom would be to her kids one day.

Engraved on the white box was Stan and Genie’s wedding date.

PRESENT DAY - 2010

Jack’s body jolted as he stood in front of their family table.

His mom and dad’s anniversary was January 7, 1964.

This was it.

He unzipped his tactical vest and pulled his shirt up to access his hidden money belt. Jack kept his valuables on him along with $10,000 in cash in a money belt he rarely opened. He opened a secret compartment and pulled out his mom’s gold band.

Their wedding date.

January 7, 1964.

It’s the ring.

The ring is the key.

Pirate Wax Museum

Disneyland Park

Jack sprinted for the underground Pirate Wax Museum. He dodged the wax pirates as he eyed the metal door. He approached the door and set his sights on the Disney “D” engraved in the door as he held the wedding band in his hand. With his thumb and index finger, he held the ring and placed it in the embossed circle under the “D”.

His hand trembled, and he could taste victory.

At the same time, he thought about what Kendall and Tony said. It didn’t matter at this point—he was too close to the prize. Jack never failed on any mission, and this would be no different. He would get his revenge—and he would save the Park.

The pure gold wedding band made contact with the circle on the heavy metal door. The ring fit perfectly, and it locked into place.

Jack waited.

He frantically scanned side-to-side.

Nothing happened.

Jack let out his pent up frustrations, “NOOO!”

The door wasn’t opening. For the first time in his life, he felt the sting of defeat. There was nothing else he could do, no way to stop the bomb, and no way to beat Nikolai and al-Haddad in time. They would win—he would lose.

He slapped both hands on to the door in frustration and started to slide down to stare at the ring that was nestled perfectly in the circle indentation of the door.

He desperately stared into the circle, hoping that something else would come to him, perhaps another clue. He needed a quick solution.

Suddenly there was a loud clanking sound of a massive deadbolt retracting. Jack froze, wide eyed, and backed away from the door. The ring, which was securely fastened popped out and fell to the ground as the giant metal doors began to open inward. A surge of adrenaline pumped through his body as he watched the doors open. He went from utter sorrow, to ecstatic joy. He gripped his SIG and his tactical light as he moved towards the door, ready for a confrontation. He bent down to retrieve the ring and put it in his pocket. He moved cautiously into the tunnel. It was bigger than he’d thought, and it had the same nineteenth century theme, the red bricks, and the sloppy mortar. It resembled the catacombs of Paris.

It was dead silent, he couldn’t hear a peep. He took a few more steps and stopped. He knew he needed reinforcements if he was going to move through these tunnels, especially if there were hundreds of hostiles down there. A swift attack with overwhelming force was the only way to put an end to this.

Jack backed out of the tunnel and into the Pirate Wax Museum. His radio wasn’t working, so he headed for the treasure room hatch to get aboveground.

“Kendall,” Jack called out through his earpiece.

“Jack, where are you?”

“Get Team Six down here NOW and send the CIA unit to the Haunted Mansion door, I need all available resources down here immediately.”

“Ok Jack, we’re headed that way,” Kendall paused, “Jack—did you do what I think you did?”

“Just get down here Kendall.”

“Jack, I think I’ve found a way to do what we talked about earlier.”

“Just get down here, I need you. We can put an end to this now, with the team we have here, but I need your help to make it happen.”

A blocked call came through Jack’s phone, and he answered quickly.

“Jack, this is Director Camden, did you just get one of the doors open and order all units to assemble on your command?”

Jack hesitated for a moment, “Yes, sir.”

“Jack, the President gave you specific instructions. By entering the tunnel, you could jeopardize the entire mission.”

“Sir, I think Nikolai, al-Haddad, and the bomb are in these tunnels. I have the best Special Forces operatives in the world with me now. If we take these tunnels immediately, we can find al-Haddad AND disarm the bomb.”

“You might be right Jack, but those are not your orders.”

“Sir, I cannot risk the lives of 50,000 people when this option is available to me. I don’t care what you guys have decided from your ivory tower, this is the best solution for the innocent people here at the Park.”

“Not if it accelerates the detonation of the bomb and it allows Khalid to escape. Khalid could be in possession of a nuke on American soil—do you understand the implications of this?”

“Yes, sir, but the correct call is to raid this tunnel with everything we’ve got. If I’m right, we’ll solve all of our problems in one sweep. We don’t have any other choice, this is the best way to stop this threat.”

The Director paused to think, “Let me call the President.”

“How long will that take?”

“I’m not sure, but you need to hold your position until I get back to you.”

“Yes, sir.” Jack called out over the secure radio to the CIA unit, Team Six, and the other SEALs on site. “All units be ready to storm the tunnel on my call.”

Kendall arrived in his full assault kit with Max and they handed Jack his gear.

“I’m just waiting for word from the Director. Show the teams the schematics of the tunnels when they get here.”

Kendall nodded at Jack with a lingering look. Jack had finally gone off the deep end, and he was going to directly disobey the orders of the President of the United States.

Team Six arrived, and they started their weapons checks. The CIA unit was behind them, and more SEALs followed. The deadliest fighters in American history were all in one place, at one time, ready to enter the tunnel. These were masters of close quarters combat, each person had been through hundreds of similar missions, they knew how to communicate without saying a word. They were the most accomplished operatives in the history of Special Forces.

“What’s taking them so long?” Jack uttered under his breath as he checked his sights and readied his weapons. Max glanced at Kendall who looked worried.

“Gentlemen,” Jack addressed the elite group, “we could be facing over 100 hostiles in these tunnels. These tunnels are unknown to us so we could be walking into a maze. Our target is al-Haddad, and the bomb.”

The men nodded, ready for action. This is what they lived for. Each man wanted to be the one to put the bullet in al-Haddad’s head. This was biggest mission of their careers and failure was not an option.

Suddenly, their headsets went fuzzy, and no one could hear anything through their closed circuit devices.

“Are you guys hearing this?”

“Yes, sir,” the Team Six leader responded, “our closed circuit communications appear to be failing.”

Jack pulled his earpiece out and checked the transmitter on his belt.

He looked at Kendall, then back at the team who was eagerly awaiting his command.

“Kendall, we need to go, we are out of time. I know you don’t agree with this, but this our best shot right now, and we need to take it.”

Kendall paused for a second and looked Jack in the eyes, “I’m with you Jack, let’s do it.”

Jack addressed the group, “GENTLEMEN, we are a go, follow my lead, and execute on my orders.”

The mechanical clicks of high-powered assault rifles filled the cavernous underground attraction as they prepared for battle. The men lowered their night vision goggles and began to move slowly into the mysterious tunnel.

El Capitan Presidential Suite

Grand Californian

“Hey Kim,” Andy smiled, “have you heard from my dad?”

“Not yet, Andy.”

Grace looked tired, “Can we go to the Lounge and get some dessert before they close, Kim?”

“No, Gracie, we can’t leave right now, but I will have some sent over for you, ok?”

The kids were getting antsy.

Kim had been monitoring the events and knew the situation was not looking good. The kids could see the worry on her face.

“You know, Kim,” Andy interjected, “we’re lucky to have you, I don’t know what we’d do without you.”

Kim smiled at Andy, but her smile faded as she analyzed the chatter coming in from the field teams.

“Look you guys, no matter what happens, you’ll be ok. Your dad will be ok, everything will work out in the end.”

“I don’t know about that, though,” Andy said, “things didn’t really work out for us with our mom. I thought she would be ok too, and she wasn’t—and now we have to live without her.”

“I know what you mean Andy, and I can’t explain why that happened. You two are the best kids in the world, and you deserve better. You deserve to be happy.”

Kim’s phone rang, she looked down and put her finger up signaling that she had to take the call. She scurried over to the master bathroom to answer the call from the blocked number.

“Kim,”

“Yes.”

“I need you to bring the kids to me, now.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Kim’s face turned pale, her moist hands started to shake, and she felt light headed. She closed the door to the bathroom and took a deep breath.

She lowered her voice to a deep whisper and said, “You promise they will not be harmed, right?”

“Yes, Kim, it’s like I told you—do what I say, and I will let your mom and sister live.”

“Give me proof that they are ok.”

A live video image appeared on Kim’s phone that revealed her mom and sister tied to a chair with gags in their mouths.

Kim injected anger into her whisper, “You better live up to your deal, or I will slit your throat, and these kids better not be harmed—you know what I’m capable of.”

“I do not want to bring harm to the children that’s not my game. But let me also advise you that if you do not come through, your mom and sister will die—they will suffer tremendously, and it will be your fault.”

Kim listened as her lip trembled; she bit her lip trying to hold back tears.
