Pretty wild, right?

When I read about this technology years ago (this was before the movie
Inception
came out), my first idea was to write a pure horror story where someone dreamed of all these terrible things that would happen in the future while the characters tried to figure out if they could be stopped. At the time this kernel of a plot was
not
an Eddie book because back then
The Unearthed
was supposed to be a standalone book. Later, when I came back to the idea and was expanding Eddie’s adventures into a series, I didn’t know how to credibly get him involved in the story. Without some groan-worthy coincidence necessitating his involvement in the plot, I couldn’t think of any way not to shoe-horn him in.

That all changed when I wrote
The Hysteria
. When I was finished with that book, I realized I had opened up the possibility of Eddie working with a team of agents on cases straight out of
The X-Files
. And so I co-opted this earlier, unrelated idea for a story and put Eddie front and center.

Like
The Hysteria
,
The Dream Machine
breaks from the formula of the other Eddie books. Some readers will welcome it as a nice change of pace I think, while others will probably prefer that Eddie stick to ghost-hunting. Both reactions are expected and fair.

I do try to break form the formula occasionally, both for my own sanity and also because I always saw Eddie getting involved in
all things
paranormal. But if you’re one of those folks who prefers Eddie when he’s ghost-hunting, have no fear—

The Possessed
, book 7 (I can’t believe it), in the series will return Eddie more to his roots. Look for that one soon. And in the meanwhile, if you’re not sure about my other books (I write more than just ghost stories!) but want to give them a try, shoot me an email at
