Yes, when it seemed she loved him so much she was willing to do anything for him. But at least the whole thing can finally be put to rest and I bring you some good news.”

“
What’s that?”

“
Adam showed us the files Logan had on your mum and the others. We thought they’d been destroyed in the fire but Martin stole them. It’s finally been legally recognised that Alexander Logan killed her, as well as the other four women.”

“
Oh thank you,” she breathed, pressing her face into his chest. “Your dad would be so proud of you. You finally got justice.”

He ran his hands up and down her back.
“Maybe that will help you finally start to heal?”

She looked up at him with tears standing out in her eyes but a smile on her face.
“I’ll tell you a little secret.”

“
What’s that?” he said, smiling at the happiness in her eyes.

“
I’ve been surrounded by alcohol and drunk people for two hours and I haven’t had the slightest urge for a drink.”

“
That is good news,” he said before kissing her. “I’ve some more, less macabre news. Strathclyde Police begged me to stay with them so I’ve been transferred to a station here in Glasgow and I’ve found a nice flat but I’m rattling around inside it all alone. I need some company.”

Her eyes lit up.
“What exactly are you saying?”

“
I want you to move in with me.”

“
You don’t think it’s a bit soon?”

“
No. I’ve almost lost you too many times. No more messing about. So, what do you think?”

She smiled up at him, running her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck.
“Yes, because I love you too.”

They stopped dancing when he kissed her hard, pulling her against him, the other dancers forced to skirt round them as they locked in an embrace right in the middle of the dance floor.

“They look happy together, don’t they?” Veronica said to her new husband.

James smiled and nodded, delighted that he didn
’t feel any jealousy as he watched them kiss. “They do. I’m glad she’s finally found someone.”

“
How does that make you feel?”

He kissed his bride
’s hand, entirely certain things had worked out the way they were supposed to, just like Freya said. “Good. You’re the one for me Vee, never doubt that.”

“
I don’t.”

“
Thanks for being so understanding. Not many women would have put up with what I put you through.”

“
You just had to talk about the baby, it was keeping you bound together. You finally got it out and that tie was severed.”

Covertly he ran his hand across her abdomen. At the moment it was flat but soon it would start to grow.
“And we’re going to have our own baby.” Soon that child he envisioned would be all too real and he couldn’t wait.
