“Shaughnessy’s dirty?” she asked, voice quiet.
I nodded.
“But you are too.”
I nodded again.
I was beyond hope, beyond redemption, but something inside me held on.
“April—”
I stopped speaking at the sound of heavy footsteps as four burly men entered the restaurant.
“Should I even ask?” she said.
“No,” I replied.
“Quickly. I want this place scrubbed in three minutes,” the boss said.
I looked at April, who watched the guys as they worked, one throwing Shaughnessy’s prone form over his shoulder as the others moved about setting the place back to rights.
“Are they cleaning up?” April asked.
“Yes. No one will know that anything happened here. But April, you can’t say anything about this to anyone. Ever.”
“And you…?”
“Gone.”
“And soon. We have to get out of here,” the boss interjected. I hadn’t expected him to show up personally, and I appreciated the gesture. Still, I had one more favor to ask.
“Look after her,” I said.
The other man nodded. Satisfied that someone would be watching her, even if it wasn’t me, I moved toward the door, toward an empty life on the run and without her, without looking back.
It was pathetic, but I couldn’t.
“Wait!” she said, her voice booming strong and loud.
I stilled, but didn’t turn, not even as I heard the shuffle of her footsteps across the floor, or when I felt the heat of her body behind me, her fingers resting atop mine.
At the touch of her hand, I looked up, spied her face from a corner of my eye, willing my heart to stay still, and trying to squelch any seed of hope.
But then she wrapped her fingers around mine and tugged, forcing me to turn. I peered at her tentatively at first and then with boldness as I glimpsed the love that I felt being reflected back at me through her eyes. My heart swelled as she stared at me unblinkingly, the love, the acceptance that I saw breathing new life into my spirit, leaving no question as to how she felt.
I squeezed her hand tight, and she squeezed back.
Then, fingers entwined, we stepped into the night.
